Six F-22 flyovers today!!  Low and loud!!!   Dogs go crazy, wife covers her ears , and of course, I run outside!!  I need to remember to bring the camera.  Low??  I'm talking 100 feet!!!  I can see every rivet and bolt!!  I'll get pics!  There is a nearby Naval Air Station and on weekends they do their flyovers.  Here they come again!!  BRB!

My wife crock-potted a Pork Butt and made 'Pulled Pork' Today!!  YUMM!!  I may need TWO!!

I have met some new friends here, so have to delete some people to add them.  But I who comments to me and you  are safe!!  My 'Custom List' can only handle 100!!  YIKES!!  But you know??  I know who my friends are!!

Gardeners were here today!!  I gave then cold wqter, as usual, and asked them to do a small job for me.  NO problem!!  Neighbor's huge ass vines crawling over the wall!!  Wouldn't be so bad if there was veggiies involved!!

That's it!!  It's late, I'm sure there is a small dog on my pillow so I'm cone!

    Break-In!!!

One or some people tried to break into our house two nights ago.  They tried to enter through a skylight but because it would have been a 40 foot drop, 3 barking dogs  and our Brinks security they didn't get far.  But they did manage to break the outer dome on the skylight!  Grrrrr!!!!!!!
    Blog Photos

Seeing as how the three skylights are almost 20 years old, we are just going to have them all replaced.  BTW, I HATE going on the roof!!  LOL
I doubt they will be back.  They will find an easier house, but I warned the neighbors and filed a police report.  Scary stuff??  Ask Becky!!

The semi-redneck across the street who was fighting with his dad has returned home and all is quiet.  I really like the guy but Geez!!!  It seems to happen every few months.  Knock it off!!!

Other than that, slow day.  I'm feeling alot better and actually ate today!!  hahaha!

New song tonight.... well, at least for my space.  Lonestar!  Hope you like it!

Thanks for your comments today.  They meant alot!!

    ................................................................................................................................................................

PS:  We have been waiting for the damned police!!  Tonight??  I heard noises, so I walked out, unarmed,  and there were 2 Asian men trying to 'jimmy' the steel gate!!  When they saw me they ran!!  WTH??  We called 911 and the police (they are the worthless!) finally arrived! Showed them the skylight and explained things.  They said. "Oh...  It's probably some teenage pranksters!"  WHAT??  No way!!  I saw them!  They had moustaches!!

Anyhow, they promised to have extra patrols drive by!!  Big Deal!!  Tomorrow yours truly is going gun shopping!!  Thinking Glock G38 or G39.  Don't worry!!  I can handle myself! (Vietnam??) I'm just pissed at these ass*&$%'s and the police!  Guess I'm on my own!!  Damn!!! NOT the best week!!  lol!  Becky is frantic!!!

    You all take care!

    August 27

    It Went Well!!

Better than expected.  No tears and I remembered to breathe!!  I even improvised some stuff like memories I will always have.  Right before I got up to speak I was so nervous that I was shaking.  But I tried to imagine all of you, my friends, sitting there.  I guess it worked.

His sister spoke to and her eulogy was very emotional.  She spoke of how John  took care of his dad after strokeand his mom during her cancer.  A few other folks spoke who I didn't know but we all kind of bonded after the service.

My only problem was coming down with the flu on Tuesday!!  Grrrrrr!!  Came home and slept for a few hours.  Feeling better!

So, it was a nice ceremony but I'm glad it's over with.  No burial ceremony....  cremation.

Take care ALL of my friends and thanks for your thoughts!!  Sorry it's Country but.....  give at listen.

BTW, I hope all of you who could, listened to this song!!!!

    I Think I'm Ready

Tomorrow will be difficult but as usual, you all have pulled me through!
As long as I keep the tears in!  lol!  'Silly Me' even reminded me to breathe!!  I also have my song ready to go.
I want to thank all of you for your kind comments.    You know what?  I've always said you were the BEST friends and it makes me smile to see you interacting with each other.  Once again, you are all the best!

    ..................................................................................................................................................................

Sorry to bring this Vietnam War crap up again but 3 more things:

    1. Waking up in the middle of the night smelling that place and the daily stench of death.  REALLY!

    2. Having 32 buddies on the Washington War Memorial Wall

    3. Watching that beautiful country reduced to a 'moonscape'

    DONE!!

    ................................................................................................................................................................

Sadly, I have been neglecting my feet and the nerves in my legs.  Killing me!!  So I am back on schedule. Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

    ................................................................................................................................................................

I think that by now, everyone has listened to the song I'm playing at John's service so I'm changing to one of my favorites.  This guy (Jamie Johnson) is a songwriter for many artists who is just now coming out with his first CD.  Love, Love, Love this song!!!   I know.... I've played it before.  Just too good!

I'll let you all know how the funeral service went tomorrow.

    Eulogy

Nervous!!!  Tell me what you think.

I could think of a lot other things I'd rather do right now.  The Spanish Inquisistion, root canals and a tax audit by the IRS come to mind, so please bear with me.  I hope to deliver this message in the spirit it is offered.

John's father had a stroke during his sixties and during his recovery, John made valient efforts to fill his dad's shoes.

I'll try to keep this short but keep in mind... this is a 976 call !!  You are being billed $2.99 per minute plus a $25 dollar activation fee !! lol

John had a great passion for motor-sports. Especially drag racing. Side by side racing to the finish line!!  He LOVED "The Birky Bunch" and helped them out!  He also loved the smell of burning Nitro fuel!! Drag racing was very important to John.

John also played Hockey!  He played Goalie and loved attending the minor league Long Beach Sharks games for 5 bucks!!  One time we went to an L.A.Kings game with cans of beer taped to our legs to save money!!  NOT a good idea!!!!  Let's just say that the beer was warm and our pants were wet!!

My friend John was very special to me.  I learned from him, as he always tried to teach.

    John??  You are SOOO missed!

    Your Brother in Love....!

I will deliver this on Wednesday.  Hope it's OK!  I want to play this song too!

    Thank You All...

For all of your kind comments.  I passed them on...  You are ALL my best friends!!

I don't feel much like posting today.  I'm leaving this song up it says so much about with John (JP).  Actually I'm basing my eulogy around it.

One funny story!!  Becky and I had a garage sale a few years ago and on the last day John pulled up with the worst collection of crap I've ever seen, including one of those canopy things.  By the time he had set everything up, it was 5 o'clock and Becky and I were in the house watching TV.  We had given up long ago but left our stuff out there and told John to sell what he could.  Becky had some really nice suits and dresses out there, some that only had been worn once.  She had them priced between $10 and $25.

John walks in an hour later and says, "Good news!!  I sold all of your clothes for 25 CENTS each!!!"  He held out $6 in quarters!!  LOL!!  I thought Becky was gonna jump out of her skin!!  I had to hold her back but it was difficult because I was snorting so hard!!  And the look on John's face??  Priceless!!

Well.... so much for not feeling like posting.  I needed a laugh!

Leaving that same song up....... For John

His wife wants me to speak at the funeral!!  ??????    Of course I will!!  He had been my best friend for (hang on again...) 25 years!!!  A skinny runt who loved NHRA (National Hot Rod Assoc.)

    Vietnam War

Yes.... I still have nightmares!  The problem was that you never knew who the enemy was!!  (This is difficult..)! When you were being fired at, either with heavy weapons or snipers, and you saw someone running?  You shot them!  I killed a 60 year-old woman!!  Now I have to live with that!!  My buddy, who was standing next to me, had just had his head blown off!  I guess I just reacted!!  It was war!  Land mines??  We encountered 75 a month!!  Funny how the villagers knew just where to step!  Don't even mention the 'booby traps'!!

It rained 24/7 for 6 months and then the temps were up to 120F.  All of us had 'foot rot' from our boots being wet all the time.  'Crotch rot'??  Don't ask!!!

I served 2 tours.... each 396 days.  One on the battleship New Jersey and the second on a River (Swift) Boat.  I was 18 when I was enlisted!  I grew up fast!!

Remember in grade school when you learned about the British 'Redcoats'??  How they came here and the Americans had to fight them off?  By the time I finally left, I felt like one!!!

Not sure why I wrote this except that sometimes I need a release....  Sorry.  That's what spaces is for, I guess.  I can't be funny everyday.

    Show Dogs

Found this article in the Orange County Register (Yes, I subscribe to multiple newspapers!) by David Whiting.  It's about a local Dog Show and I thought it was excellent!!

My first girlfriend was a dog.

    And I called her "Pal."

    I'm not being mean.

She really was a dog, a furry, brown and black terrier.

It was many decades ago, when this little dog followed me home from school. She never left. Still lives in my heart, in fact.

I figured I'd come clean right away with my dog bias because if you hate cute, lovable, wonderful, caring canines, this column may be not for you. (Try playing fetch with your cat instead.)

Imagine: 100 dogs gathered in the outdoors, all on their best behavior, hardly a yip and certainly not a nip. That was the scene I discovered this weekend during a random run in O'Neill Regional Park at the foot of Saddleback Mountain.

Dozens of cars, cages and tents were gathered under the oaks for a two-day show put on by the International All Breed Canine Association, an organization similar to the better known American Kennel Club.

I wandered over and immediately was befriended by Bobbie Libman of San Juan Capistrano. She was patient enough to explain the IABCA and the AKC, which puts on the fancy Westminster dog shows in Madison Square Garden.

The differences boil down to two things: one is international, one isn't (you can figure which is which by their names); also, AKC compares dog vs. dog while IABCA evaluates each dog on the standards of that particular breed.

But enough of the technical stuff. I wanted to check out the beautiful animals, learn a little about an activity I'd never realized often has its competitions in the great outdoors, and find out what turns dog lovers into competitive dog lovers.

"I guess you could call it the pride," Libman answered while discussing why go through all the bother of competition, travel, training, grooming and paying fees. Showing and even breeding dogs isn't about money, she assured me during a later phone conversation.

"There's nothing like the devotion and the constant appreciation that you get from a dog," Libman explained. "There also is the unconditional, undying love and affection that you get from a dog."

Libman grew up without dogs. Her mom's decision. When she was on her own, her first dog loves were Great Danes. But the pain of big dogs' relatively short lives proved too much.

So, Libman turned to smaller dogs, which live longer. It was love at first sight when she saw her first Chinese Shar-Pei. Twenty years later, she still loves the breed.

    "They're adorable."

The judges in O'Neill didn't disagree, awarding Libman's dog, Mikobi's Little Brick Schmidt House, 16 medals, including three best of show.

As shiny as the medals are, Libman's love of her dog is brighter.

"They're pure of heart and soul. They're great company. They're fun to watch," said Libman. Perhaps concerned about how her two daughters might feel if they see this column, Libman also was quick to note, "Obviously, you can't compare them to people because they're not people."

My wife, Sue, might disagree. She calls Ziggy, our son's and daughter's Schnauzer, "My baby."

Turns out, Libman and Sue feel the same way about dogs:

    "They're fur people," Libman laughs.

    I'll have to ask Ziggy.

    Medical Marjuana

I debated with myself whether to post this or not but I decided to put it up for discussion.  Tell me what you think.

Medical marijuana use has a history stretching back thousands of years. In prebiblical times, the plant was used as medicinal tea in China, a stress antidote in India and a pain- reliever for earaches, childbirth and more throughout Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

In recent decades, medical researchers have investigated marijuana's effects on various kinds of pain -- from damaged nerves in people with HIV, diabetes and spinal cord injury; from cancer; and from multiple sclerosis. Marijuana has also been hypothesized to help with nausea induced by chemotherapy and antiretroviral therapy, and with severe loss of appetite as seen in people with the AIDS wasting syndrome.

A legal prescription form of THC (Marinol) exists, yet researchers say it's far from a perfect drug. Taken orally, its absorption is highly variable and unpredictable and often delayed, says Dr. Igor Grant, a UC San Diego psychiatrist who directs the university's Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research. "Smoking is a very efficient way to deliver THC," he says.

As a result of its federally illegal status, medicinal use of marijuana is restricted to carefully vetted clinical research studies or to patients in states such as California that have passed laws to allow for personal medical use. Research on the medicinal use of marijuana relies on government-issued marijuana cigarettes, which come in different strengths and are supplied by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The UC Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research in San Diego helps coordinate clinical studies to investigate the safety and effectiveness of marijuana. Here's what they've found.

    Neuropathic pain

Recent research suggests that marijuana can assuage this chronic-pain syndrome in which burning sensations occur and simple touch can feel like hurt. It is unaffected by aspirin-like drugs and fairly resistant to stronger analgesics such as opiates.

In a 2007 study on neuropathic pain related to HIV infection, 50 patients smoked marijuana cigarettes three times a day or marijuana cigarettes from which active ingredients had been extracted. Subjects then rated their pain on a scale ranging from "no pain" to "worst pain imaginable." The results, published in the journal Neurology, showed a 34% reduction in ratings of pain in the marijuana group compared with 17% in the placebo group over five days of treatment.

Another study in 44 patients reported in June in the Journal of Pain found that marijuana alleviated neuropathic pain arising from a variety of conditions, including spinal-cord injury and diabetes. Participants smoked marijuana on a set schedule -- first two puffs, then three puffs an hour later, then four puffs an hour after that -- from a single cigarette containing either 0%, 3.5%, or 7% THC. Average pain ratings before smoking were 55 on a 100-point scale and decreased by 46% in both treatment groups and by 27% in the placebo group one hour after the last puff.

Analgesic drugs are often tested against experimentally induced pain. Such studies have been conducted for marijuana too. In one 2007 report in the journal Anesthesiology, 15 healthy volunteers received skin injections with capsaicin -- the chemical behind that fiery spice in chile peppers -- and then smoked different-strength marijuana cigarettes. The medium dose, with a 4% THC concentration, lessened the burning pain.

These three pain studies all concluded that smoked marijuana can bring relief to sufferers of neuropathic pain comparable to other analgesic drugs. It is not a cure, Grant says: "It's like other pain medicines, you have to keep taking it."

Study subjects did feel high, an effect that varied among individuals. Marijuana also affected thinking, shown as problems with tasks of memory and complicated reasoning after the strongest marijuana cigarettes were used. Potentially problematic, these effects were tolerated by subjects -- no one opted out of the study because they couldn't think straight.

Grant says it's important to have a choice of treatments because not everyone responds to or can tolerate the available drugs. Antidepressants are used for neuropathic pain but cause dry mouth, constipation and urinary problems, and must be avoided by people with conditions such as glaucoma. Others can't take aspirin-like drugs. "Having an alternative compound is always good," Grant says.

    Multiple sclerosis

Patients with multiple sclerosis suffer muscle spasms, pain and tremor. Anecdotal reports suggest that marijuana may be helpful, but controlled studies are few. One, presented at an April meeting, had 51 multiple sclerosis patients smoke 0% or 4% THC marijuana cigarettes daily for three days. Intensity of spasms was reduced by 32% and pain ratings by 50% after smoking marijuana, compared with 2% and 22% reductions after placebo cigarettes. Five subjects withdrew, citing side effects: feeling too high, dizzy or fatigued.

Other studies in patients with multiple sclerosis used a cannabis extract that can be taken orally. In a 2007 European Journal of Neurology study, nearly half of 184 patients experienced at least 30% improvement in muscle spasms.

But a 2004 Neurology paper showed no reduction in objective measures of arm tremor with cannabis extract, although five subjects out of 13 reported feeling improvement. This might have resulted from mood-altering effects of the drug or from some aspect of tremor not measured.

    Nausea

A 2008 review published in the European Journal of Cancer Care analyzed 30 clinical studies using cannabinoid drugs synthesized in the lab and concluded that they were better than standard antinausea drugs in alleviating the nausea and vomiting that accompanies chemotherapy. One such drug is Marinol, a THC preparation approved by the Food and Drug Administration for precisely this purpose.

Survey studies suggest that some people with HIV smoke marijuana to counteract nausea caused by antiretroviral therapy. Researchers at the UC Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research have tried to study the effect of smoked marijuana on nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy but have struggled to enroll enough subjects, Grant says.

Bruce Mirken, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project -- a group that lobbies for the decriminalization of marijuana -- says he is all for research on the chemical components in marijuana with the goal of making more-purified and perhaps more-targeted drugs that do not deliver a "high," but does not see "criminalizing use of that plant by people who are ill when you are making its main psychoactive ingredient legal in the form of a very expensive pill."

Tom Riley, a spokesman for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, says marijuana advocates are seeking a free pass. "They want to be exempted from the regular [drug] approval process," he says.

For the record??  I say legalize it and tax the Hell out of it!!  Goodbye Federal deficit!!  It is NOT addictive, there are NO side effects and NO cravings!  Take this from an Old Hippie!

    Looking forward to your opinions.

Side note:  Medical marijuana is legal in California and a few other States but not Federally, so doctors who prescribe it are losing their licenses and places that distribute it are being raided weekly.

    Ping Pong

I found this article in the L.A.Times today and found it not only interesting but also appropriate for the Olympic Games.  It was written by Bill Plaschke.

BEIJING -- The net is a combination of metal and Scotch tape. The playing surface is stone and scratched.

The surroundings are a city park, the players are lean and sweating, and everyone stands in a circle waiting to see who's got next.
    Welcome to Chinese playground pingpong.

    And, um, I've got next.

"You want to play me?" Wang Qing says through an interpreter.

Wearing low-slung jeans and a faded orange T-shirt., he sets a paddle upright on my side of the table, balances it perfectly on its handle, and walks to the other side with a stare.

Game on. Game over. His serves send me lunging into the bushes. His backhand volleys push me back into the mud.

Fittingly, one of the unwritten rules of pickup pingpong is that if you lose the point, you must pick up your ball no matter how many people are standing around it.

I spend the next 20 minutes picking up balls out of puddles, gutters and amused spectators' sandals. I pick up so many balls I strain my back. I am exhausted. They are laughing. He is laughing.

"You are the best player I have ever seen," I say.

"You are one of the worst," he says.

    Wang Qing is 13.

Welcome to China's national pastime, in the Olympics, in my face.

    ------

Appropriately, Olympic table tennis began play Wednesday in a Peking University gym that feels like "Hoosiers."

Narrow sections rise like little balconies from the floor, the chants of spectators washing over the athletes below, a cramped but cozy home.

"Guo Yue!" chanted one red-tattooed fan, screaming the name of an athlete.

"Chi-na!" the crowded chanted back in a throaty accent that could have come straight from Indiana.

Like basketball in the U.S., table tennis -- yes, it's also acceptable here to call it pingpong -- is China's neighborhood sport.

Like U.S. basketball, it is also China's most dominant sport, with the country winning 16 of 20 possible gold medals since table tennis joined the Olympics in 1988.
It is so dominant, the players who don't make the national team somehow end up on other teams -- seemingly every other team.

In Wednesday night's women's team competition, the Dominican Republic was led by Lian Qian, Austria was led by Jia Liu, and, batting leadoff for the United States, was Chen Wang.
Also like U.S. basketball, pingpong is their sport with the most independent expression.

On the opening night, China's female players kissed their paddles, blew on the balls, pumped their fists, rubbed the table, and slammed down their feet when serving.

It is the only sport where the otherwise-polite Chinese fans cheer wildly when the opponent makes a mistake.

It is the only sport where the otherwise-polite Chinese athletes keep pounding on that mistake by staring and stalking.

After Guo won a match against Xue Wu of the Dominican Republic, she slammed her paddle on the table, spun on her heels, and walked away.

Sort of like my opponent did after crushing me a day earlier on the playground.

    My 47-year-old housewife opponent.

    ------

We found the pingpong playground simply by looking.

They're everywhere in Beijing, stone tables tucked into any available bit of green, China's sport mostly because it doesn't require much space.

This playground was alongside a busy street in Sun He village, a bedraggled collection of rocky roads near the airport.

On one side were belching warehouses, on the other side were belching buses. One block away, the street was filled with smelly gas and marching policemen. The rest of the park was packed with ancient exercise equipment used by howling children.

In the middle of this madness, surrounded by trees, there was pingpong peace.

"We play for our health," said Guo Shu Qiao, 60, a retired farmer from Mongolia. "It is a sport for the people."

Beijing police reportedly barred Mongolians from entering bars during the Olympics, fearing they would cause too much trouble.

But Guo is always welcome here at the table, where he shows up most every day from 6 to 8 a.m. and again from 4 p.m. until dark.

Like many here, he brings his own paddles and ball. And, like many, he plays all comers for all hours without keeping score.

Back and forth he volleys, saying little, rarely leaving his spot, sweat growing, until he finds his opponent's weakness and slams the ball off the court into the tree.
"We don't play to win. We play to learn about each other," he said.

Except, of course, when they play the foreigner.

During my two visits there, I lost to the 13-year-old boy, the 47-year-old housewife, and several assorted bystanders.

Sometimes somebody watching would keep score. Other times, we would just play until it was obvious I was whipped.

After I had exhausted my opponents and my novelty, I walked down the middle of the park looking for one more game, one more chance to win, when I felt a tug on my hand.

It was a 13-year-old girl dressed in jeans and a funky shirt. She simply walked up and grabbed my paddle.

She had next. She also had nothing.

She was terrible. She was worse than me. She flailed at most shots, showing none of the passion or ability of those gathered around her.

Afterward, she handed me her paddle and said quietly, in English, "Welcome to

    Beijing."

She may have been tanking it, or she may be truly awful, but either way, this game was obviously her gift to a poor sweat-soaked American in need of a boost.

Pingpong not only is China's national sport, but its national language, its national handshake, its national connection.

Playing to learn about each other, indeed.
