July 31 Finally!!! Some GREAT Workers!Lawn-Boy and his crew showed up at 8:00 this morning, AGAIN, and immediately went to work until 4:00 in the afternoon!! Things are starting to take shape! The sprinklers have been laid in the parkway (the area between the sidewalk and the street) and it was explained to me exactly where each sprinkler will be spraying!! Like I'll remember!! Lawn-Boy seems like a good boss! He brings his two workers lunch every day and supplies them with a case of bottled water! Where's MINE??? But he's very professional and explains to me everything that they are doing!
Tomorrow (Wednesday) Mrs Serious and I are going to the County Fair!! Not sure how long my feet will hold out but we'll hit the usual high points..... Like the FOOD!!! Maybe the garden exhibition, the craft building (for her) and then we'll see how it goes!! My feet have been feeling much better lately so this will be a good test! I refuse to use a wheelchair because I beleive that exercising my feet and legs is the only way to help them heal. They are feeling better everyday!!
Thursday is 'Mow The Backyard Day' and I dread it!! Not just because of my feet but because it's been sooooo hot!! I've been thinking of doing the trimming and edging in the morning and the actual mowing around sunset when it's much cooler! That should work!! I guess the best thing to do is just put your head down and get it over with! And I will!!
It seems as if it's hot everywhere!! Can't wait for Fall!!!!!!
Take care my friends,
Bob~
July 30 Lawn Boy... And The Rib RecipeRonaldo, aka Lawn Boy, arrived this morning with his crew to begin the long awaited sprinkler installation and sodding of our front yard. Unlike DAD, on time and ready to work! (Speaking of DAD, I've hired him to do another job, but nothing major!) I've taken 'before' pics of the yard and will continue to until they are finished. Hopefully they will be finished by the weekend, but who knows!
Now, the ribs Mrs Serious made yesterday were TOO GOOD!!!!! We ate the remainder of them tonight and they were just as good! They also are so easy to prepare and you don't need a bbq!! So here is the recipe from Gourmet magazine.
footnote: Serves 4 to 6 as an Hors D'Oeuvre or 2 to 4 as an entree. And if there is a more satisfying investment of 15 minutes, I have yet to find it!!
Orange Soy Baby Back Ribs
2 Racks baby back pork ribs (2 to 3 lbs total), cut into individual ribs
1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon ground cumin
Put ribs in a large sealable platic bag. Stir together orange juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, honey and cumin in a bowl until sugar is dissolved, then pour marinade over ribs in bag and seal bag, pressing out excess air. Marinate ribs, chilled, turning bag after 30 minutes, for 1 hour total.
Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 375F.
Transfer ribs and marinade to a 13 by 9 inch baking dish and arrange ribs in 1 layer, not touching. Roast ribs 30 minutes, then turn over ribs with tongs and continue roasting until they are tender and well browned and marinade is thick and syrupy, about 20 to 30 minutes more.
I PROMISE that you will love them!!!!!
Have a Great Tuesday!
July 29 My RewardI finished the connectivity in Mrs Serious' office today! Computer, fax and phones, with all of the wires organized! Wooo Hooo! Also set up is the new 20" LCD flat screen HD TV that is resting on a shelf right above her computer monitor. She is pleased!! How do I know this?? Well she made the most wonderful dinner tonight as a reward for my work!
Orange/Soy sauce/ Cumin/ Brown Suger marinated Baby-back Ribs
A Beet/ Sugar-Snap Pea/ Red Onion salad with a Corriander vinigarette dressing
Herb and Garlic Rice Pilaf
Ice Cold Watermelon chunks
Iced Tea
But the best part was that we ate under the cover of our new patio!!
It was FABULOUS~~~ And leftovers for tomorrow night! It was worth all of the work!
If I'm smart, I'll keep doing those 'Honey-Do's!!
I hope you all have a GREAT week! July 28 A 'Secret' RevealedBefore I get to the secret, let me say that I almost didn't/couldn't post tonight (GASP!!!!) I had to UNPLUG.THE.MODEM!!!!! All day!!
We had an electrician friend arrive today to rewire Mrs Serious' office which is where my connection originates. She then decided to refurbish the wood floors there which meant no wires on the floor.
Meanwhile, I spent the morning cleaning the patio, hosing down the furniture and getting it ready for actual use. Then on to the office to install new blinds. After the floor was done, or at least the section that she did, we moved the 7000 lb desk back into place!! So tomorrow is getting her electronics (computer, fax, phones, etc) hooked up. I'm hoping to do it this time with a little more forethought, you know, actually planned ahead? We'll see how that goes! A birdsnest of wires can be frustrating. Once we get the basics working, she can work on Monday while I shuttle/haul/drag/swear at the remaining crap like bookcases and FULL file cabinets! We're actually hoping we will enjoy our first meal under the new patio tomorrow night!!
Now to the 'secret'! It seems that our nieces bought Mrs Serious a small (one foot tall) Italian fountain for her birthday and she was looking for just the right color to set it off. WHAT??????? I know that the office needed painting, but to plan a whole office around a $40 fountain just seems..... odd!! Especially since had me trying to help her with the color and I hadn't even seen the thing! I thought she just liked yellow! Luckily she loved the color and is pleased. One lesson I've learned in 26 years of marriage: If Mama isn't happy, NO ONE IS!!!!!
Have a Super Sunday!
Here's the pic of the fountain against the new wall color:
One more thing. Can someone tell me why I cannot download Windows Live Writer? I've been trying for months!
July 27 She's Back From CaboMrs Serious and her friends T and J returned from San Jose Los Cabos (aka Cabo San Lucas) today. It being a Friday, at 5:00 in the afternoon, (major rush-hour time) it took me almost an hour to complete the usual 20 minute drive. I was driving northbound on interstate 405 I noticed that the southbound traffic was bumper to bumper!! I was looking at a 2 hour drive home! But because California is the 'Freeway State', we were able to devise an alternate route and were home in less than 45 minutes!
But I degress...
Mrs Serious and her friends had the usual wonderful Mexican vacation. A beautiful hotel, great food, massages all around (and I'm talking 2 hour massages for $40) , and multiple drinks at the in-pool bar. As a bonus there were Manta Rays jumping out of the water chasing fish (no pics!) and a Pelican landing in the hotel pool, swimming a few yards and taking off again! Guess there was no food there! (pics!!). As a reference, here is a short explaination for each photo:
1) Mrs serious making out with a cab driver after only being the for 10 minutes!
2) Becky and her friend J, with J falling off of the barstool
3) Her friend T trying to email
4) Another photo of T, who owns and shows horses, going for a ride
5) Mrs Serious TRYING to check her mail
6) The Mariachis on their last night
7) A look at the resort
8) That Pelican
9) Him AGAIN!!
Hope you enjoy the photos! As for me? I'd just want to go there for the food!!!
OK!! Spaces has messed up the order but I think you can figure what is what! How do I place photos in the body of my posts!! Anyone???
Have a Great weekend!
New MusicMoody Blues!! Hope you like it! Sibling RivalryI have three young dogs, and not exactly puppies. There are photos of them in my albums. They are all around 2 years old and are starting to express their 'pack leader' qualities !
Bonnie is a Cairn Terrier and as a female, likes to think she is in charge. Pffft!
Buzz is a 3 year old Water Hound/Terrier mix who has had major spine surgery!
Baxter is a miniature long haired Dachshund: Very shy but very sweet
The battle for pack leadership has been going on for two years. Baxter is definitely out of the running, although he has shown signs of 'kick ass' lately!! Too bad he can't back it up.
Buzz seemed like the logical leader because of his size and his loud, annoying bark! I mean Howllll Catterwalling is what I call it! However Bonnie is faster and smarter , just like human women!!
As Buzz charged at her today, she simply dropped down, took his legs out and had her way with him!! Ummmm.... Lucky Buzz!!
But. I think they are realizing who the True Pack Leader is!~~ That's right!! Your's Truly!!! The guy who FEEDS them!! The guy who they walk!
As for the wife??? She KNOWS her ranking.....! And so do the dogs!
And me....!?!?
Uh Huh!!! So I'm #2!!! July 25 Finally! It looks as if this remodeling nightmare is finally over... almost!! Close enough for me! The painters finished today and did their usual excellent job. Everything looks great and they got the correct yellow in Mrs Serious' office. They were gone by noon, which is usually the time DAD was showing up! Unfortunately, DAD may be returning! While the painters were sanding the fascia boards around the roof they exposed some serious termite damage. Now the termites are gone (we had 'orange oil' used and have a 15 year warranty) but I need to have these areas repaired so that the painters can return, at no charge, and apply paint. So I'm thinking DAD for 3 reasons:
1. I don't care how long he takes
2. He works cheap
3. It's gonna be a messy job
However, I may have to put a hold on the lawn until he's done!! He IS sorta messy!!
But on to the good news! The patio and office have been painted and the painters did their udual excellent job! They even got the color right for the office. Of course, Mrs Serious will be the final judge of that! I'll be posting pics tonight of both and also the repair job that DAD did to the block wall!! That wall is going nowhere now!!!
All that's left is to wait for my electricion friend to show up between tomorrow and 3 weeks from next Monday and the sodding of the yard! The lawn has turned a lovely shade of brown at this point and Lawn Guy showed up today to give yet another dose of RoundUp!! Dude?? I think it's DEAD!!!
So tomorrow you ask?? NOTHING!!! No paint, lumber, sand, roofing materials, concrete or lazy workers!! Nothing stressful at all..... until Friday!! That's the dreaded day that Mrs Serious and her girlfriends return from Mexico. At LAX (Los Angeles Int'l Airport). At 5:00. During rush hour!!!!! I live 30 minutes away so I have decided to leave here at the time their plane lands!! That will give them time to go through customs, pickup their luggage and stew a little!! HAH!!
The pics I post will show the patio and office from beginning to end! Apparently in reverse order!!! And the office pics look crappy because I had to use the old Sony Mavica!! GRRRRR! Also forgot to take a pic of the wall! Oh well!
Take care all and have a great Thursday! Sheesh!!OK, OK!! Everybody settle down!! I realize that that was BAD!! *sigh* I promise to do better!! JESS??? Sit!! NOW!! Better! Sheesh!
OK! I do have a favor to ask so bear with me! There is this song I put on my space! A Jimmy Buffett song!! It's my life anthem. You don't have to love it, just listen to the words...! And tell me what you think!'
Other than that!! I'm outta here!! Fend for yourselves!! Watch that step!!....... Dang!!!! That's gotta hurt!!! Sorry Jadey!! (Rub a little dirt on it!!)
Nite all!!! July 24 Something Different Tonight!!OK! Enough of my home improvement posts for awhile! I think that most of you are probably getting sick of reading about how the Serious house is being made-over...... What's that?? A few of you still want more?? Well then, here is a short update! The painters returned today (I'm holding their compressor hostage, just to make sure they do) and they will finish tomorrow. My electrician friend cancelled but he promised that he would be here at a definite day and time. Wednesday, Thursday or Friday between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM! What a guy!!! The crazy Asian woman still hasn't returned for the rest of the bed, but as Jess said, maybe she's using the parts for a Vietnamese craft project!! If so, I will wanna see it!! I just don't want her bringing that crap back HERE!!
No pics tonight.... I know how disappointed you all must be, but tomorrow, I Promise!!! FINAL ones!! Except for the lawn, which looks like someome spread Wheaties all over it! Guess the RoundUp is working.
Here's my stupid post for tonight
HUMOR FOR LEXOPHILES (LOVERS OF WORDS)

July 23 Another Day, Another Post!Found this site today!
Pretty cool!~~~
Well, today was VERY eventful! 'DAD' showed up at 10:00, finished up the job, retreived his crap and left with his check! Within 15 minutes the check had been cashed!! What a guy!! I'll be sure to hire him again!! NOT!!
Now the painters are a different story. A Korean husband and wife team, they do an excellent job at a GREAT price!! They return tomorrow to finish up. The garage door guy did a great job too, as the lawn guy is. So I think that I've learned a huge life-lesson throughout the past few weeks. A lesson that will live in my heart and soul forever. Never hire DAD again!!! EVER!!!!!
Tomorrow the painters return to finish!! Then my job will be to put everything back where it belongs and clean the remnents of this work up!! Mow the lawn and get the back
yard green again. Shouldn't take long. OH! Tomorrow night I have an electrician coming to add a few 3-prong electrical outlets to the office. We'll pay him with a nice BBQ!
My dogs are frustrated being locked up in certain rooms and in the house while this work has been going on. I thought the walks would be enough but apparently they want to HELP with the painting!! In their dreams!!!!!
OH!! The bed I left out with a FREE sign on it?? Didn't quite work out as planned. It sat there all day and all night!! (Hey? It's a nice bed set!). Anyhow, this morning I sensed a disturbance in the Force!! Sure enough, the bed parts had been moved and the one bed frame that rises has risen!! Then I spotted HER!! A 4' 2", OLD, frail Asian woman hauling parts of the beds down the street! She returned and loaded up more bed parts on her fragile, wobbly cart. Problem was, she took parts from two DIFFERENT beds and didn't take the mattresses!! I've been waiting all day for her to come back but so far she has been a no-show! Kinda like DAD!! Now there is no way that the parts she hauled off will fit together (she also forgot the hardware I left out) so I'm hoping she returns for the rest!! NO ONE will want what's left!! After all of the 'FREE' junk that people hauled off last weekend I thought those beds would be gone before I had the sign up! Go Figure.......
Why does life have to be so complicated?
I'll have pics tomorrow! Oh Joy!! Right??
July 22 A Stress Free Day... Sorta!I woke up early (for a Sunday!) and dragged the Day bed into the front yard!! Put up a 'FREE BEDS' sign and figured it woud be long gone by noon! Nope!! Still there! No one even stopped to look at it!! After all of the worthless crap that was taken last weekend I was sure that it would have a new home by now!! Besides, it's a really cool bed! Actually 2 beds! It's a day bed (headboard, footboard, sideboard) with another bed that you can collapse and slide underneath! After you pull the bottom one out, you squeeze a bar and it rises to form TWO beds of the same height!! Great for a small guestroom!
So I was disappointed that it wasn't taken but maybe the painters will like it!! lol And to top things off?? We haven't had a drop of rain since October, but guess what? You guessed it!! It RAINED today!! Not alot but enought that I know it's a conspiracy!!!
Tomorrow the painters will be here early and 'DAD' will come rolling in around 11:00! We've used these painters before and they do a great job! A husband and wife Korean couple. I know DAD will be here because he wants to be paid. He has more agreed-to work to do first!
Tonight I'm putting up pics of the new garage door, the bed I'm trying to give away and before & after pics of the spa area!! Sorry I don't have pics of the spa when it was full of sand, but you know how much I HATE SAND!! Well, not beach sand!
I'm visiting all of your spaces tonight and I'll be back tomorrow to post again!! That's what I do.... at least lately
have a GREAT week! July 21 Extreme Makeover Part #1Woke up this morning and felt much better.
So I bit the bullet and just did it myself! Her office is now officially ready for the painters. It really wasn't as bad as I had thought and my honey-do list is a lot shorter. Re-hookup the outdoor dog waterer and fix a malfunctioning toilet for the umpteenth time!
Oh!! Yesterday the concrete was laid in the old spa whole and the new garage door went up! I'll post pics of both tomorrow. For tonight I'll post a pic of the now echoing office and the place where I hid her crap!
'Dad' didn't return today, as promised, to repair the block wall but that's OK, cause I haven't paid him yet!! He's not very handy for a handyman but the guys who did the concrete work WERE!!! I'd like to hire them again but they said that they only will work thru 'Dad'!! Pfffft!!!
Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend! Mine got ALOT better!!!
PS Note that in the office photos that I was thinking enough to keep my cable modem hooked up!! Sorry1 But I DID Post!!!SICK!!!!!! ,,,,,Back tomorrow>> (that took 30 minutes to type! ,Seriously.....)
Thinking Costa Rican Flu!! ( Another 30 min,~~~ UGH!! Just feel like......you know!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzhnd!! Bob! ERGrrrg~ July 19 Odds and EndsWell! Surprise surprise!! The workers ACTUALLY showed up today, including 'Dad'!! And get this!! THEY WORKED!!!!! The patio roof is finished, the electrical that they destroyed is working again, the old spa is ready for the concrete, the excess lumber is gone and MOST of the sand is out of here! It's almost like watching the 3 Stooges!! They entertain me until I realize that I'm PAYING for their antics! Nothing like 'contractor slapstick'!! Nyuk, Nyuk. Nyuk!!
Tomorrow is supposed to be the final day before they are gone! Laying the concrete, repairing my falling-over wall , removing the last bit of sand (God!! I've learned to hate sand!!) and hopefully the cleaning up of the empty water bottles and crap that have accumulated in my poor yard!! (I've decided that 'Dad' looks strangely like Nick Nolte! Could it be?.... NAH!)
Again, I will be watching them like a hawk!!!
Also tomorrow, the Garage Door Guy returns to install a new door!! BTW, he is NOT affiliated with 'DAD'!! Lawn Boy will be here also to spray another 5 gallons of RoundUp on the front lawn! It has turned a lovely shade of brown already!!
Now you would think that by the weekend, all of the work, except for the sodding of the lawn would be done, right!! NOO, you fools!! It is NEVER done!! And why you ask? Because my lovely wife is leaving for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Saturday with her girlfriends for a weeklong vacation. I usually enjoy her little excursions because I get to have a mini-vacation sitting here at home. But NOT THIS TIME! She has decided that her office demands redecorating: Repainting, the removal of old furniture, having a few new electrical outlets installed, and an upgrade on the TV she has in there!! Which means pulling everything out of there and putting it god-knows-where!! (Not sure if the hot tub is gonna fit tho... Or the wet bar!!) I have been warned in advance that the painters MUST use "Straw Hat Yellow #6203" or I will be tortured!! I really don't mind but it does cut into my 'shuttle the wife and her friends back and forth to the airport' gig!! And I sooo enjoyed that job!!
All I ask is that you pray for me and if you don't see a post for a few days??? Call 911!!
They know where to find me..... July 18 After 26 Years... Still the Love of My LifeToday is the anniversary of Mrs. Serious and my marriage of 26 years. With all that we have been through it still doesn't seem like 26 years has passed since we exchanged wedding vows. In fact, I remember our wedding as if it was yesterday.
We had a small ceremony in her Mom and Dad's backyard with about 100 close friends. It was a short but sweet ceremony but to me it seemed to last an hour!!
My wife's Nebraskan family's wedding tradition entails dragging the new bride through town in anything from a tractor, hay skid, manure spreader, wheelbarrow, etc. We lucked out by presented with a brand new wheelbarrow! I think her Dad still uses it! We made it as far as the end of the driveway...
We spent out honeymoon in Cozumel and it was beautiful! Only problem was... our flight left at 2:00 AM! So we had to race home, finish packing and race again to the airport. We made the flight but our 'honeymoon night' and most of the next day were spent sleeping! Nice planning, huh?
On our way back we stopped at my parents home in New Jersey and found that they had planned a HUGE family reunion!! That too was great but we were never so happy as when we finally got HOME!!!
Looking back now, it was not only a whirlwind wedding/honeymoon but also a very short courtship. A courtship that started the previous October. Who says that love at first sight doesn't work?
Tonight we went to our favorite restaurant, Captain Jack's, in Sunset Beach and celebrated with filet mignon, king crab legs, some wonderful oysters and a nice bottle of wine. Then a nice drive along Pacific Coast Highway in the 350Z!!
I've added a few pics of our wedding including an awful one of me taken tonight, right before I dove into those oysters!! We didn't exchange gifts this year... the home improvements will have to suffice.
All I can say in closing is that our marriage has lasted longer than most nowadays, and she hasn't killed me... YET!!
The Patio is UP!!Not quite finished, but UP!! It still needs painting and a light/ceiling fan installed, but the hard part is over!! The workers (so unlike 'Dad') arrived at 7:00 am and jumped right in! They were done by 1:00!!! I must say.... It's a thing of beauty!!! Solid and strong!! And you know how important this is from my previous posts... They cleaned up WELL!!! Luckily for me, these same guys will be back on Thursday to place the concrete over the sand-filled spa! I tried to get their phone number but they are faithful to 'Dad', Mr Clueless! Oh yeah!! He overordered on the wood too!!! My yard is overflowing with 'extra' sand and lumber!! What's next?? Concrete?? (My mind is racing, thinking about what I can produce with these 'extras'!!
Anyhow, one job has been completed, along with the shed! I'm just hoping that these guys are done before the sodding begins..
Here are a few pics!! You should be able to recognize the BEFORE!
PS... Planning on adding a paint job and a ceiling fan with a light!!!
Remember 'before and after' NOT the other way around! July 17 My Spaces Friends That You Don't Know!I took a head count tonight and realized that I now have 61 friends on my 'Spaces I Visit' list!! That's alot!! But you can NEVER have too many friends.
But my point is, I have been trying to post something, even if it's really lame, every day!! and over a two day period I try to visit everyone on my list. I usually check to see if someone has posted something new and if not, I make sure that I have commented to their last post! After all, it's the polite thing to do. Plus, if you don't comment, don't expect comments! And we all know how much fun comments are to get!! Right???
I have been getting lots of comments lately, due to, I think, my 'everyday' posts. That's GREAT and I love getting them! You are all wonderful friends!!
But now, the point of this post. I have a few friends who have GREAT spaces, who post WONDERFUL blogs and are the BEST of friends!! But what bugs me is that they get very few comments!! Just because they haven't been 'Found'..... YET!!
So I'm gonna list a few of them. I hope you will go to their spaces, take a look around and leave a comment!! I think you'll have a GREAT time and meet a new friend or 2!!
Just so you know, this is something that I haven't been asked to do this... Just something that needed doing!!
Trust me!!!
He's a great guy who loves motorcycles and is recovering from a nasty accident!!
Another great friend!! She is a published author of 2 books with another due in October! Her space will challenge you witrh her TV trivia.
An Iowa gal with firm family roots! She's a sweetheart
with a heart of gold!! I soo enjoy reading her posts about her family!
As for Amy?? Just visit her space! I don't feel free to even try to discuss her medical problems but you can by viewing her video blogs!! She is awesome and very brave!! Go There!! NOW!!!!!
Another dear friend who posts weekly but never receives comments it seems., except from me!! I just couldn't do that!! Post with no expectation of a comment! Just check out her space, OK???
Shupe is a NUT!! A young gal living near Saly Lake City, She seems to just totally enjoy life!! She will crack you up!!!
She is my newest friend!! I'll be visiting her every day because she posts every day!! Read her past posts to learn more about this wonderful woman!!
So Anyhow, I really hope you will visit these wonderfull friends of mine!! Read their posts, give them a 'Hey' and come back and visit them again!! You'll be glad you did and they will enjoy you're space too!!
Now as for tomorrow?? The lumber has been dumped on the front lawn, all of the garage crap is GONE!! ( you would be surprised at what people drag off when you put a 'FREE' sign on it!!!!) The lawn guy stopped by and sprayed a gallon of Roundup on the old lawn. 'Dad' and sons are coming tomorrow to start on the patio and concrete over the spa. I'll be in the house taking notes....with the dogs at the ready, like they ALWAYS are !!! The new garage door goes up Friday!!
OH!! And the best news??? (at least for Mrs Serious...) The 350Z in the garage!! As for me?? Whoopdee Doo!
Enjoy the rest of the week and VISIT my other friends!!!! I'll be watching closelt!! lol!
July 15 Garage Cleaning - DONE!!We got it done today, which wasn't too bad since we didn't do crap yesterday. It echos in there!!! We had lots of stuff, alot of it good! But we were too lazy to have a yard sale so we put it all in the driveway and placed an "Everything Is Free" sign up!! Most of it was gone in 4 hours. I also took 42 gallon cans of old paint to the local HazMat place and got rid of them 'legally'!!
So the garage is clean and the new door arrives tomorrow. Then the 350Z goes in, and I get my driveway back! WoooHooo!!!!!
We were filthy, hot and sweaty afterwards and I'll tell ya, a shower never felt soooo good! Now we're exhausted so I'm leaving you with an email thing I received from a friend. It's pretty good! Enjoy!!
Until tomorrow.... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
Some of these I believe and others ?? Whether they are true or not, I think you will get some laughs! In George Washington's days, there were no cameras.. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are "limbs," therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, "Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg." ***************************************************** As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October). Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs? Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term "big wig." Today, we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig" because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. ****************************************************** In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The "head of the household" always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the "chair man." Today in business, we use the expression or title "Chairman" or "Chairman of the Board." **************************************************** Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, "mind your own bee's wax." Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term "crack a smile." In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . . . therefore, the expression "losing face." ***************************************************** Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified woman, as in "straight laced". . . wore a tightly tied lace. ****************************************************** Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards, but only applicable to the "Ace of Spades." To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't "playing with a full deck." **************************************************** Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were told to "go sip some ale" and listen to people's conversations and political concerns.. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. "You go sip here" and "You go sip there." The two words "go sip" were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term "gossip." ****************************************************** At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in "pints" and who was drinking in "quarts," hence the term "minding your "P's and Q's." ***************************************************** One more: Bet you didn't know this... In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations. However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey." (All this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you?) ****************************************************** July 13 Bonnie! And a Busy, HOT Weekend!Had another frustrating day with the workers! They showed up at noon and were gone by 1:30. They did finish the patio deck and rearranged the sand pile so it's off of the neighbor's driveway. Their Dad was again a no-show. Supposedly they will start work on the patio structure next week. Uh huh!! I wish they would at least remove some of the crap that's laying in the backyard. I'm trying to be calm! LOL I'm hoping that 'Dad' shows tomorrow.
Speaking of tomorrow, it's the dreaded 'garage cleaning day'! We recruited a niece from Phoenix to help. She flew in today but for airline ticket price purposes her flight landed at an airport an hours drive from here. And guess who had to drive there at 6:00 am? Yep! The reason for the garage cleaning is twofold. It's a mess (isn't it always) and Mrs Serious wants to park her 350Z in there. Then tomorrow night we are attending a 50th anniversary party. Another long drive! But it should be a blast!!
Now on to Bonnie! She's a two year old Cairn Terrier (think Toto from the Wizard of Oz) Although she is the youngest of my dogs, she is definitely the 'pack leader'. The other two dogs know not to mess with her but for some reason they still do!! And she relishes the opportunity to wreak havoc on both of them.... at the same time!
She is an amazing 'ball' player! She's ready to play anytime, anyplace, with anyone. It's also cool that not only will she bring the ball back and place it at your feet, but she will play until your arm falls off. If you pick her up? She WILL find a way to lick your face!! If you rub her belly? You will be here friend for life!! Her other favorite activities besides playing
ball would be torturing Baxter and beating up Buzz.
But she is adorable and definitely Daddy's girl! |
