November 30 You Don't Need a Weatherman....To know which way the wind blows, but....
I'm pretty sure that if there was a survey taken to determine the Best and Worst weathermen on television, Southern California's would rank dead LAST!! After all, what real weather do we have here? Sunny and warm, sunny and hot, sunny and cooler, a few clouuds, etc. And they do a fine job with that! It's when Winter arrives that they run into problems. Not that they have to deal with snow or freezing temps, but you would think that after taking that 1 month meteorology course they would be able to predict rain. Yeah... you would think.
The weather forecast for today, which hadn't changed since Tuesday, called for partly cloudy skies, temps in the mid-70's and a 20% chance of light showers. Sounded like a good day for some yardwork! I woke up this morning at 6:30 and as I let the dogs out, I noticed that it had sprinkled over nite. Cool! By 7:00 it was a steady light rain and by 8:00 it was pouring!! Except for momentary let-ups it has been raining heavily ALL DAY!! And now they are saying that the heavier stuff is due to arrive later! (This from the idiot who predicted 'partly cloudy'!) He's forecasting cloudy and cold tomorrow, so I'd better pull out my bathing suit! BTW, Our TV weatherman's name is just perfect for his job! Dallas Raines!!!
Check out Dallas!!!!
Good news?: We always need rain here and that was a good storm!
Bad news??: Flash floods and mudslides due to those fires last month. Warnings are already in effect. But to be fair, the WeatherChannel missed seeing this storm coming too.
With all of this rain, it turned out to be a good day to check out the repairs that 'Dad' made to the patio roof. I've been checking all day and not a leak to be seen! He even phoned me today to check! Guess he's getting better after firing his lazy son.
I know that most of you are having nasty winter weather this weekend, but I hope all well, safe and stocked up with supplies.
Take care and send some snow my way!! November 28 All Quiet on the Eastern Front...As in the East coast of the U.S... New Jersery specifically... where my mom and dad live. I just got off the phone with them and are both doing great! They finished putting up the storm windows this past weekend and spent the past few days winterizing the yard. Tomorrow it's back to remodeling the bathroom and finishing up some painting. Not bad for being 87 years old!!! I'm soooo glad that I have their genes! Being alone, my mom wasn't in the mood for cooking a turkey this year so they went to a diner... Yes, a diner!! I used to love eating in those old diners and apparently their turkey dinner was pretty good.
Back in California, things are returning to normal after the cabin trip. More Santa Ana winds today but so far no fires. Mrs Serious' company has been begging her to take more vacation time before the end of the year. Nice, Huh?? So she is leaving tomorrow to visit her sister in Phoenix (Yes, driving the Z!) until tuesday. As for me, I have a 'honey-do' list in one hand and my party hat in the other... Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions!!
To prepare for her trip across the desert, she took her Nissan in for an oil change yesterday and since we only have one key for it, she decided to buy a spare one. And it only cost $175!!!!!!! WTH??? Apparently there is a computer chip built in to it and if it would have been lost, the cost for a new key AND a new ignition would have run around $750 so I guess it needed to be done. Whatever happened to the good old days when you could have a spare car key made at Sears for $.50? Now I feel 87!!! LOL
I posted some cabin pics in a new photo album. Hope you enjoy them! As for me, I'm off to find a way to 'accidently' destroy that honey-do list!!! November 27 Down From the MountainI'm back from a wonderful, relaxing six day stay at the cabin. We had a really nice Thanksgiving and hope that you did too. Mrs S had a chance to recharge her batteries, the dogs enjoyed their first visit there and I just enjoyed a change of scenery. There were a few annoying glitches though including not being able to get online (long story) and only being able to watch 5 channels on the TV (another not-as-long story), however I was able to take some pics. I'll try to post an album tomorrow.
No sign of fire damage there, but we were told that the fires had ocurred, thankfully, on the other side of the mountain. The weather there this weekend was very dry and windy, which cause some concern, but there were fire crews and fire helicoptors patrolling the area.
Well, since I haven't had use of a computer for the past week or so, I have lots of catching up to do. Hopefully I will visit you all by wednesday!!
Take care,
Bob~ November 19 Staples Center FunWe just arrived home from Staples Center and yes, although the Lakers game started at 6:30 and it is now 11:30, we all had a great time! It was a much longer drive than usual and Downtown L.A. was even worse than usual. It seems that Staples was overbooked tonight. Not only was there a basketball game there but also the American Music Awards and a car show. I was driving along, bumper to bumper in the in the extreme right lane when my trusty navigator (Mrs S) informs me that I need to be FIVE LANES to the left. So after ticking about 30 other drivers off and making it there I hear the dreaded words, 'Oops!! You were in the correct lane to begin with!!'
But once we got there it was a blast!! Her folks hadn't been to Downtown in decades and had never been to Staples ever. Great food, good company and a table overlooking the court.
Here is a view from farther back.
It really is a beautiful arena. For dinner it was juicy, tender steaks all around along with some appetizers and huge side dishes that we shared. Note the 4lb baked potato!! And those brown crispy looking things in the center were the BEST Deep fried onion rings EVER!!
Me and FIL
Mrs S and MIL
Group shot
After dessert (carmalized pineapple upsidedown cake that we shared... YUM!) Mrs S insisted that I pose for a few 'toothy grin' pics, so here goes.
As you can see, I'm still not quite comfortable with these teeth OR smiling but that will come in time, I suppose.
All in all we had a fabulous time but once a monty or so is enough for me. Mrs S however will be returning
tomorrow with customers in tow for a Clippers game. I'm just glad that I'm NOT driving!
Oh, and the Lakers won 106 to 78
November 17 Right On ScheduleAs you know I went to see my dentist on Thursday and it went very well. The upper gums are healing rapidly and should be ready for permanent dentures by the end of the year. I already forget that I'm wearing them! The lower ones are doing good also, however there was alot more work done on them so they are still a little tender. But he took care of that sore spot (by grinding away at the denture) and I'm able to eat more solid food. Just in time for Thanksgiving!! It looks like I won't be getting the permanent lower dentures for at least 3 more months! Grrr... On the 27th he will put in 'soft liners' and that will really help.
Sunday night, again, is a 'Night at Staples', only this time I get to go! I know that the food will be great but do they have to play an annoying basketball game at the same time? Just kidding!! It will be fun and I'll be checking out where the actual seats are located! Of course, this could all change at any time between now and Sunday night.
We are spending this Thanksgiving at our mountain cabin! For maybe 5 days. I'm curious to see how close those fires came to us. I'm planning on bringing along the laptop and my camera so I'll be posting pics! Maybe even one of my teeth?? A real cheesy one!! lol I'll also be bringing my 3 dogs, some very warm clothes, Oh and a turkey that I get to cook in the antique oven!!: At 6000 feet! Wish me luck...
Have a nice weekend all November 15 Quickie Update...So you know I'm still alive! I have my first follow-up appointment with my dentist tomorrow morning. It's only for him to check out how well my gums are healing and to hopefully do something about this lone sore spot I have, although it has improved some. Oatmeal, soup and yogurt are getting old FAST! It's also my chance to ask a few questions since I was sorts of out of it the last time I saw him. I think I'll drive Mrs S' 350Z, just to make it more interesting.
It looks as if we will be spending Thanksgiving at our cabin with her mom and dad. I'm curious to see how close those fires came. We're thinking about spending 5 days there and we are bringing along the laptop and camera, so I'll post some pics. Also tagging along will be our 3 dogs. It will be their first time there so I'm not sure wht to expect. One thing I'm sure of is that there will be lots of barking at squirrels and Blue Jays and marking of territories!!
The temps here have been in the 80's the past few days (NOT very autumn-like) but should cool off by the weekend. By Thanksgiving the temps in Crestline will be in the upper 40's! That's more like it!!
I'll let you know what the dentist has to say. Two days until the weekend!!!
Take care November 11 Pimp Yo' Ride Week! That's right folks! Beginning Monday it's the 2nd annual Pimp Yo' Ride week. Because last years's was such a rousing success (actually maybe it was over a year ago..) I thought it might be time for the second edition. To participate all you have to do is put up a new photo album showing pics, with brief descriptions, of your vehicle(s): Current cars, dream cars, past cars, trucks, vans or whatever mode of transportation you use. Please!! No roller skates or shopping carts!! Well, I guess those are ok! Just post a quick comment here to let people know that your album is up. Last year's event was fun and very interesting. I hope you will all join in!
Mrs Serious is back at Staples Center again tonight, this time for a Hockey game. She promised that she would know the score this time! She gets these tickets from her company and nine out of 10 times she brings along customers, like tonight. The seats are center court/ice and they come with free parking plus the resraurant; probably close to $1000 per seat! As soon as I'm feeling well enough, I'll be joining THAT party!!
My mouth is feeling better each day and I treated my feet to new shoes today. Hope you are all having great weekends.
Take care, Bob~
November 09 Surprise, Surprise!Yes! Two unexpected surprises at the Serious household today. Both of the 'Good' variety.
* Remember 'Dad'?? The screw-up handyman? For those of you who don't, he was the guy we hired five months ago to do some work for us (erect a new patio, fill in the old ground-level spa with concrete, repair a block wall and build a tool shed). Everything turned out fine except he way overordered on the sand and concrete and the patio roof leaked! I've been trying for over a month to get him back out here to repair the roof but kept hearing excuses such as; I'm moving... I've had a few personal problems... I hurt my foot, etc. Well, this morning at 7:30 he calls and tells me he will be here in 30 minutes to repair the roof. He was and he did!! Without his son!! Apparently he had to FIRE his son! One too many naps on the job I guess. So I'm waiting for the next rain to see how good of a job he did. And to think, all it took was for me to mention the California Contractors License Board!
* The second surprise today was also in the form of a phone call. It was my DENTIST!!! On his day off! From his home! Checking to see how I was feeling! Huh?? A doctor actually taking the time to check on a patient?? Unbeleivable! That was a REALLY big surprise! We talked for 20 minutes, him asking me about bleeding, pain, etc, and giving me a few tips on how to help the gums to heal faster. Then he gave me his cell number, just in case. He also confirmed that he did indeed give me an extra two root canals, bone grafts and implants because in his words, "while I was already in there...". WOW!! I checked and that 'extra' work comes to about $4000! Just my luck! I finally find a great dentist and now I won't need one anymore! lol
I'm just hoping that surprises come in three's.
Have a super weekend everyone! It Is Finished!Today went very well. Actually much better than expected! I was able to walk, unassisted, from the car to to the dental chair and back again. I thought that this was pretty amazing until it was revealed to me that during the first visit (unbeknownst to me) I was given 2 EXTRA pills while I was in the chair!! Apparently I looked nervous. No wonder I had to be dragged to the car and then slept for 7 hours!!
Anyhow, today everything went smoothly. I did wake up during the last half hour but by then the heavy lifting had been finished. The root canals have been performed and the tungsten tubular implants have been... well, implanted. They are threaded on the inside and will eventually have posts screwed into them onto which the dentures will snap on to. They also thread into the jawbone. He decided to add two additional root canals/implants at NO CHARGE so the the dentures will be held in place even stronger. Something about Merry Christmas! LOL This dentist is sooo cool!
Now it's just a matter of waiting for my gums to heal and shrink until I get the permanent ones, both top and bottom. For some reason these lower gums are hurting ALOT more than the upper ones did... my jaws too! (must have been the four root canals). But he prescribed Vicodin (YAY!) and it seem to be working very well. I have temporary dentures but at this point they don't fit all that well and tend to flop around quite a bit (The upper ones are fine since I'm able to use adhesive). However he insists that I wear them 24/7, yes even to bed, but there is no way I can eat while wearing them. So it looks like lots of yogurt, oatmeal, soup, etc for the next week or so. I just hope I don't swallow them in my sleep!!!!
I'm taking it easy this weekend and will be around to visit all of you November 07 "D" DayYes, tomorrow is D-day for Mr Serious. The D meaning Dentist, Dentures, Dread... Demerol??? Whatever. My final big dentist appointment is tomorrow at 11:30 AM and I'm actually looking forward to it! Well not actually the appointment but AFTER the work is finished. Corn on the cob, here I come! I spoke with my very nice dentist today and he filled me in on what's on the menu for tomorrow. I take my three 'magic' pills (Trazolam?) at 10, Mrs S drives me to the office at 11:30 and then I get dragged/carried into the chair, just like the last time! 10 extractions, 2 root canals, 2 bone grafts and 2 implants later I will be dragged/carried back to the car and driven home to sleep it off for 6 hours. He told me that I will be in the chair for 3 hours in a semi-conscious state. I'll have to return several times in the next few months for minor procedures, but by January my new teeth will be good to go!
My foot continues to improve daily, my non-drinking is now on day 9 with no problems and somehow over the past 6 months, I've lost 30lbs!
I probably won't be around to comment tomorrow but maybe tomorrow night. You just never know!
I'll let you know how it went! November 04 Odds and EndsSince the subject of my posts for the past few weeks have been only about the wildfires here, and the fires are all but out, I thought it was about time to get back to my 'regularly scheduled program' ie: The goings on at the Serious Household.
As for yours truly, I have not felt better in years! The pain in my foot has almost completely disappeared for the past two weeks and is still improving everyday. With the swelling also way down I think I'll be taking longer walks in the next few weeks. I just don't want to push it too much quite yet. The numbness in my legs is now only about 40% of what it was a few months ago and my balance has become much improved. Besides all of that, after much prodding from Mrs S, I have completely quit drinking. Even beer and wine. Today is day #6, but I don't even have a craving for it! My biggest motivation now is that I just feel so much better.
My little Cairn Terrier, Bonnie has turned into a fierce hunter!!
This is her 'mean' look
This is her 'normal' look
Within a one hour period last week she delivered to me a huge lizard and a mouse, dead of course! Seeing as how she already has a dove to her credit she is now eyeballing the crows that frequent our neighborhood. The only problem I can see is that the crows are bigger than she is!
Mrs Serious is doing well, although her job has been very demanding for what seems like forever. Dealing with disgruntled gas station dealers, coordinating the set up of new stations and answering the hundreds of emails and faxes that come across her desk each day would seem to be enough but it seems that whenever a new project comes up, she is the one chosen because no one else can do it! She is in her home office at 6 in the morning and does not finish until at least 5 in the afternoon. Since I'm retired, I handle the house cleaning, laundry, dishes, yard work, shopping, cooking, etc. What a team! lol
Last Thursday she attended a big golf tournament dinner in Palm Springs and in the prize drawing won a new KitchenAid stand mixer, well, by proxy. Some guy won it but didn't want it so he gave it to her!! Except now she has TWO!!! Both brand new! I think she's giving one to her sister but not sure.
Tonight she and three of her girlfriends are going to Staples Center to watch a Lakers game. Well, not actually 'watch' the game, but the tickets came with reservations to their excellent restaurant with a view of the court. So it will be fine dining with the sounds of a basketball game as a background. If I ask her what the score was when she returns I KNOW I'll get a blank stare! LOL
That's all for now! I hope you all have a wonderful week.
Take care, Bob~
November 02 A Teen's Harrowing StandThis is the fourth and last in a series of So Cal wildfire stories from the Los Angeles Times
FACING THE FLAMES | David Ottesen
David Ottesen, 16, survives a daylong battle to save his family's Poway house and neighborhood from the Witch fire.
The power was out, most of the block had evacuated and fire was dancing all over Poway. David Ottesen, 16, had spent most of the day helping his father and grandfather protect other people's houses. Now his own was in trouble.
It was just after dark. David, a junior at Poway High School, and his father, Eric, had been working with neighbors, using a pickup to haul a generator and a water pump from house to house so they could draw pool water and wet down yards and roofs. David's grandfather, Sterling Ottesen, who happened to be visiting from Utah, was helping too. Between chores, David fielded calls and text messages from his four older brothers scattered in Texas, Arizona, Utah and Orange County. Amid chaos, they had a kind of order. By the time the sun went down, he and his father and grandfather were back at home, a 20-year-old, four-bedroom place on Bent Tree Court. Then David stepped out the sliding glass door into the backyard. "I looked up the hill and saw the flames coming down," he recalled. "I was really scared." So was everybody else. Within minutes, his mother was sitting in the driver's seat of the family's Ford Expedition, ready to bolt, surrounded by crucial possessions. David threw in most of his clothes, his iPod, some of his CDs, none of his books, and the synthesizer he plays in a band with some buddies. War Toys, they call themselves. "I thought about some of my posters," David said. "But my dad was like, 'Let's take the more important stuff.' " David, his father and his grandfather returned to the backyard. The fence at the edge of the property erupted in flame, and the nectarine and plum trees ignited. The good news was that the Ottesen property is a full acre -- the family's tennis court and pool and fruit trees stood between the fire and the house. The bad news -- the bad news was pretty obvious. "Our palm trees caught on fire -- three big ones by our tennis court were burning," David said. He was standing on the tennis court, near the pool, working the hose while his father dealt with the generator. "These embers were flying at us, hundreds of embers, and we had to dodge them," the boy said. His arms and legs stinging from the heat, he played the hose on the trees and embers for 10 or 15 minutes. It wasn't looking good. He wasn't sure what was coming next. Then a honk. Sirens. Flashing lights. Three fire engines. Firefighters rushed into the yard and threw high-pressure water at the trees. "They just went to town on every single flame that was in our backyard," David said. "We probably wouldn't have a house if they hadn't come." Just like that, the situation turned. The house was going to be OK. The block too. Within an hour or so, the firefighters had gone on to other houses, and David's mother had ventured out of the driver's seat. Fox News showed up and interviewed his father and grandfather. Somebody heard that the In-N-Out Burger on Carmel Mountain Road was still open, just about the only place nearby, so the family raced there for burgers. David ordered a "triple-triple, animal-style," with fries and a drink. When they got home again, the power was still out, the house was hot and smelled of fire, and there wasn't much to do. David took a shower in the darkness, then went to bed. And slept for 13 hours. christopher.reynolds@latimes.com |
