The Good, the Bad and Just My Luck!!

I was talking to my neighbor Mike at 4:30 and we agreed that the kids wouldn't begin showing up until at least 6:30.  Then we looked down the street and here they came!!  They have been coming in waves of 10 but at least 30 minutes apart.  That and the fact that I have only given away half of my candy , well... I guess that's the good.

The bad??  My camera (8 years old) went south on me after one picture!!  So here it is.

Man??  I had planned on many more!!

It's 8:30 here and I haven't had a trick or treater in 40 minutes!!  Heck!!  I have had 80 kids so far, down from 230 last year!  Yes, I count so I can plan next year!!  Sure didn't work this year but candy I have!!

Oh yeah, and my mask was eaten by Bonnie!!!!  Yeah, mask #1!  So I put on mask #2 and scared the crap out of her!!  LOL!!

It's 8:45 and it's over!!  WTH???  Last year it was 11:00.  I have some candy to eat!!!

Question!!   When did the time change start happening in November??  I always remember it happening before Halloween!!

Anyhow, I hope you all had a frighteningly good Halloween!!

Pushing forward with my foray into Classic Rock (sorry BethMarie), here is a classic 'driving song' by the Dutch band Golden Earring.

    Halloween! Woooo Hoooo!!

Maybe my favorite holiday!  And I always really get into it.  Becky is in Phoenix for the weekend so I'm on my own.  Come to think of it, I usually am on Halloween night.  Just give me a big bowl of candy, a scary mask, some spooky music coming from the garage and this year??  My camera.  Problem is, what mask to wear?  I have narrowed it down to 2 and I need your input.

I hope to get some good pictures tonight but with those masks. some of them might be shots of little kids running away down the walkway.  The kid across the street hasn't trick or treated in 4 years, so I visit him and find him hiding behind the couch!!  I'm soooo mean!!  LOL!

The weather this weekend is looking good!!  Temps in the 60's and possible rain on Sunday.  Today it's 70 and it feels so much better.  My back is feeling much better too!!

I may add to this post later but I'll probably, maybe do a new one tonight with pics and a new song

Take care and have a Spooky Halloween!!!

    Tired and Bored...

So I need to change things up.  Starting tomorrow until at least Wednesday I will be playing Classic Rock and shelving the Country.  Don't worry Country fans......  just a break!!  Some of these bands you have never heard of and some you have forgotten.  How about if we start out with some Jethro Tull!  You remember Ian Anderson, right??  Hmmmmm......!

I promise to post something more substantial tomorrow.

    Have a GREAT Friday!!

    Tids and Bits!

The weather in Philadelphia looks a little better.  They predicted snow for today but it
never happened.  So game on!!  Although, cloudy skies, winds about 25 and temps in the low 30's!!  Perfect baseball weather!!  PFFFFFT!!  The Rays checked out of their hotel yesterday morning but when the game was postoned, they tried to check back in, but they couldn't.  So they found a hotel in Wilmington, Delaware!!!  HA!!

My back is feeling MUCH better today!!  Hopefully by the weekend?????  Speaking of the weekend, we are looking for showers on Sunday!  As for today?  Around 80.  The breeze is flowing off of the ocean today!!  About time.

Can't find Burt!!  Starting to hibernate somewhere I think.  He took in alot of food in the past 2 weeks so he should be fine.  I just want to find him to make sure he is protected from our Winter rains.  I will  continue to search.

Has anyone heard about the 'Mechanical Television'?  I had not, until I saw a program on History Channel/Modern Marvels titled 'Failed Inventions'.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_television .  No picture tube and no camera!!  Go figure!!  You should have seen some of the other failed inventions!  But like they said, failed inventions bring on inventions that succeed.

I found a new cereal that I love!!  Honey Bunches of Oats with Peaches!!  Just too good!!!  I was never much for cold cereal, or even breakfast for that matter, but this cereal is GOOD!!!!!  Try a box!

Darn but this is a boring post, but at least the title fits!

Jimmy Buffet today.  Another of my favorites by him.
Hope you all had a Great Hump Day!!

    PHILLIES ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    woooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Becky walked up to me in the bottom of the 9th inning when there were 2 outs and asked me about some email she got.  I won't tell you what I said to her!!  But wait until her Soap Opera Awards come on again!  She will pay!!  LOL!

    Baseball Heaven??

Well last night sure wasn't.  And tonight's game (the continuation of last night's fiasco) , has already been postponed until tomorrow night.

But I found this article in the L A Times today that I thought pretty cool.  This guy isn't a sportswriter but he's my favorite columnist.  Chris Erskine.  This is good!  And cute!!!

Take a Trip to Baseball Heaven

First of all, in Baseball Heaven no one spits. No seeds, no chew, none of those long streaming Niagara Falls you see every 30 seconds on TV these days -- in high definition, no less. This is why I paid two grand for my TV -- to watch millionaires spew like hillbillies?

Well, in Baseball Heaven, there is none of that. The players can adjust their privates publicly and wipe their mouths with both sleeves. After all, this is hardball, not the opera. It's just the ever increasing amount of spitting we detest.

But while we're building our Baseball Heaven -- the perfect park, the perfect day -- let's do away with artificial turf. As Richie Allen once said, "If a cow can't eat it, I don't want to play on it."

In fact, in Baseball Heaven, there are no indoor fields, certainly not a Tropicana Field. The turf at that awful Tampa Bay field looks like the outdoor carpet surrounding the ice machine at a cheap Southern motel. There is mold, I'm sure. You could wipe out the Taliban with the spores that have accumulated behind second base. That spot where everybody spits.

Yes, in Baseball Heaven every stadium is outdoors, with dry Dodger air and the rugged San Gabriels as the perfect purple backdrop.

And in Baseball Heaven, we have certain codes of conduct, strictly enforced, though all the players pretty much abide by them. The codes of conduct include bad haircuts and weird beards. For example, have you noticed the Rays' dugout? Like a gang of car thieves. You can't go purely by appearances, sure, but how else are we supposed to judge strangers? And they don't get much stranger than the Rays.

Of course, the Rays aren't the only team with image issues. In Baseball Heaven, no one gets to wear their pants like pajamas, curling beneath their cleats. No, in Baseball Heaven, all the players wear their knickers just below the knee, so the stirrups show in those great, bright baseball hues, colors reserved for baseball socks and national flags.

See, in Baseball Heaven, we're suckers for tradition. There is no designated hitter. No free agency till after you've played 12 years. If the fan behind home plate pulls out a cellphone and waves to the folks watching at home, he'll spontaneously combust.

In Baseball Heaven, we'll do away with those scoreboards that look like Vegas on acid. In Baseball Heaven, all fields are as green and lush and marvelously simple as Wrigley or Fenway. There's an ancient tavern down the block where Harry Caray, Bob Prince, Mel Allen, Red Smith and Jim Murray tend bar after each game. In Baseball Heaven, Vin Scully calls every inning. The faint scent of a good cigar drifts from the press box. Plaschke wears a bowler.

In Baseball Heaven, hot dogs are a buck and peanuts (double-baggers) 50 cents. Kids who show up at the gate with straight A's on their report cards get in free. They can bring their dogs.

In Baseball Heaven, the owner sits up in the stands, not down with the mayor or Barbra Streisand in what amounts to the first-class section. No, the owner sits up with Sid the butcher or Miguel the roofer, who worked the weekend in order to bring the kids along to a Tuesday game. That's where the owner sits, with the people who have sacrificed to be there.

In Baseball Heaven, the wind is always blowing out yet there's a no-hitter going into the sixth. Drysdale is on the mound and Mays is in center. Clemente is in right, of course, hands on his knees, daring the ball to come to him. In the outfield, there's a sign that reads: "Hit this spot, win a suit."

In Baseball Heaven, your dad is in the seat next to you, just as he was at your very first game. He shows you how to keep score again, even though you already know. He smells of after shave.

You buy the old man a beer (50 cents) and then another, because you don't wait in line in Baseball Heaven, they bring the stuff right there to your seat.

And you're so close to the field, you can smell the smoke from Gibson's high heater or hear Durocher or Stengel barking at the rookies.

"Sit down, kid," Durocher says. "We'll call ya if we need ya."

That's Baseball Heaven, featuring all the little things that somehow slipped away. You don't get nostalgic in Baseball Heaven because everything you loved about the game is all right there.

    Batter up. DiMaggio's on deck.

Erskine is a Times staff writer.

My back is starting to get alot better!  Less pain and more tingling.  Hopefully by the weekend it will be back to normal.  Just in time for Becky to hit the road again.  This time for Phoenix!  So I have to handle Halloween trick or treaters by myself.  I have 200 candies and after that??  Individual raisons!!  Or pennies!  I'm thinking one more bag.....!  After all, I love having leftovers!!!  My mask this year to greet the treaters is frightening. Wolf mask that even scares my dogs!!  Last year I had to rip my mask off and chase 6 little ones down to give them their candy.

The song tonight is really one of my favorites!  Hope you are having a good week.  Tomorrow is Hump Day!

    Chicken Fajitas tonight!!

    Italy Photos!!

Finally!  The Italy photos are up!  All 87 of them!!!! And I'm exhausted.  LOL!  For some reason only MSN knows, the slide show is going really slow.  I suggest that you click on a photo and it will take you to another page where the photos are much larger and you can manually go from pic to pic.  I eliminated the duplicate, out of focus and most of the people-pictures.  I did the best I could with the titles but after goes through them I'm sure there will be some changes made.  Like where the heck is Pompeii??  HAHA!!  Enjoy!

    *****************************************************************************************

After the Phillies routed the Rays last night, they lead the series 3 games to 1 and could close it out tonight.  Especially with their ace pitcher, Cole Hamels, on the mound tonight and their power hitters finally emerging.  But the Rays are still a dangerous team and if the Phils lose tonight it's back to Florida for the last two games.  Then anything can happen.

    *****************************************************************************************

Well, it's been over a week and my back has not improved as much as I had hoped.  But it is slowly improving.

NEW song coming up tonight, as soon as it downloads.  Toby Keith.  Hope you had a bearable Monday!

Well, that didn't work so here's some Joe Nichols.

Phillies are leading 2 to 1!!  Woooo!

    Sunday, Sunday...!

First off, I hope you ALL had a great weekend.  Secondly, Thank You all who responded to my request to comment to JJ!  15 comments????  That sure beats 3!  I'm sure that she will be coming by your spaces to comment soon.  I TOLD her that I had the best friends!  Since I'm a dork and forgot to attache (thankfully Dana had my back) here it is again for those of you who thought I lost my mind!!  (That happened LONG ago).

Today was a lazy day.  I watered, washed dishes and then it was sports, sports, and more sports.  Two football games, NASCAR and the World Series, game 4, coming up.  Last night was a wet and wild one in Philly!  Luckily, I am in SoCal.  The Phils blew a 3 run lead and the game was tied 4 to 4 in the bottom of the 9th.  They loaded the bases with no outs and the Rays used a 5 man infield.  Carlos Ruiz hit a little dribbler down the third base line and the the ball was flipped over the catcher's head.  Game over.... Phils won.  The wet part?  The game was delayed for two hours due to heavy rain.  The game ended at 1:47 am Eastern time.  BTW, the Phillies pitcher last night was 46 years old!!!

    ***************************************************************************************

I am still working on those Italy pics and promise to have them up tomorrow.  641???  Geez!  I'm doing my best.  You will like them.

Hope you all had a Super weekend!  Halloween on Friday.  Last year we had over 230 kids!!  I will be busy!

Had a hard time choosing a song tonight so I hope you like this one.  Emerson Drive!!  Good one!!

    A Favor From You All!!!

I wasn't going to post tonight but I received an FYI from a good friend (Dana) asking for a favor.  She has a new friend who is relatively new to to spaces and wants to make friends and receive comments on spaces.  She has tried some other sites with no results but she has had a few nibbles here.  She was thrilled to get even 3 comments!!  I won't go into details, but she needs us.

Now I know that I have the best friends and I also know that you will come through for me.  I also told her that she needs to comment in order to receive comments.  I hope that you will do me this favor and bring a smile to her face!  Thank you in advance my friends.

    *****************************************************************************************

I am currently working on Becky's Italy photos but she took 641 of them!!  I need to do some major editing!  Hopefully , tomorrow I will post that photo album.  Great pics!!!!

I can't stop playing this song!  I'm sorry but I love it!

    Have a Very Nice Sunday!!
    October 24

    Wireless!!!

Hi all!  I know, I haven't posted in two days (gasp!).  But I have excuses, errr... reasons.  My back, which is finally starting better (thanks for all of your suggestions!  the 'hot/cold and the stretching helped with the pain but what really occurs is that a nerve gets pinched and it takes several days for the spasms to subside).

Next, Becky has returned from Italy and has a LOT of pics!  You will love them!  I hope to post them this weekend.

And lastly, my internet connection took a dump on me.  So I called my cable company yesterday afternoon and amazingly, a technician showed up this morning.  He informed me that the setup I had was no longer being used or supported by them because "This Is Crap!"  LOL!  So he removed the old modem and the two ethernet adaptors that ran through our electrical lines and replaced them with a wireless modem and a wireless USB adaptor.  When I told him that I also had a laptop he gave me an adaptor for that too...... all at NO CHARGE!!!!  Much faster and reliable.  On a side note, the cable guy had his car alarm go out and I had to give him an AAA battery to turn his obnoxious alarm off.  He was so embarassed!!

    ***************************************************************************************

For the past three weeks my local Albertson's has, in their infinite wisdom, decided to change the whole store around for no apparent reason.  What used to be a 15 minute trip now takes 45 minutes to an hour.  As an example, aisle 1 = beer, aisle 4 = wine, aisle 7 = liquor.  There  is a sign over one of the aisles that reads 'Hardware/Coffee'.  Another reads 'Toothpaste/Picnic Supplies'!!  What are they thinking?   And the worst part is that they change it everyday!!  When I asked them about it they reassured me that they would be handing out maps!!  HAHAHAHA!!!!  I'll need a compass too!  You should see the regulars pushing their carts around with blank looks on their faces and their jaws dropped (including me!).  It looks like a scene from 'Night of the Living Dead'!!  If it wasn't so sad it would be funny!  Some aisles are so narrow that you can't pass anyone or turn your cart around!!  That would be the Juice/Femine Hygeine Product aisle!!  It took me three trips to find the paper plates.... in the pork and beans aisle!  I tried to buy whole bean coffe today but there was none.  The drone I asked said that it was beause their grinding machine wasn't set up yet.  I told him that I had my own grinder and got a blank stare, so I had to buy some Don Francisco crap!!  Now Becky is ticked too!! LOL!!!

    ***************************************************************************************

The Santa Ana winds weren't so bad and only 2 small fires.  Cooling off this weekend if you consider 86 cool!

    ***************************************************************************************

It looks like game 3 of the World Series will be rained out since there is a 90% chance of rain.  If that happens there will be no off day on Tuesday and the two teams could play games on five consecutive days. But now it looks like the storm might blow out of there by game time but it's going to be cold and windy.

A Sawyer Brown song tonight.  Have a GREAT weekend everyone!

    October 22

    Bad Day

My back is worse. Twice as bad!!! Just typing this hurts.  I was bent over most of the day but I got a real good look at the dirty floor.  I finally put an ice pack on it and then took a nap in the recliner.  That helped but I'm still hurting!!  I always thought that the worst pains were toothache and earache but a lower backache really shuts you down.  I phoned Becky today and told that she was was going to deal with an 'almost' spotless house.  She agreed.  So her cousin is picking them up at the airport tomorrow.   I'm resisting taking the codeine I have but will ice it down before bed.

    *********************************************************************************************

As for Becky?  Back to the Vatican again today!  And the Pope pulled up in his Popemobile and blessed the crowd.  Then he blessed all of the crap they bought in the souvenier shop!!  WTH??   Tomorrow they fly from Rome to Paris.  YUCK!!  What a filthy city!!  And the worst airport ever!!!  And their rail system?..... Don't get me started.  Every bad thing you have heard about France is true!

    ***************************************************************************************

The winds picked up today, 95 degrees but only one small fire, so we are good for now.  Give Me WINTER!!!!!

Remember that tree I showed you a few days ago?  Here is one of the leaves with a small lighter next to it for perspective.  I told you it was huge!!!

    MVC-001S

    Grrrrrrrrr!!!!

But at least this wind event has not been nearly as bad as the last one.

I hope you have a nice Thursday!!  As for me?  I hope I wake up pain-free!!

    October 21

    More Italy

I phoned Becky (I have phoned her Everyday) and today was Pompeii.  She said it was fabulous!!  Then back to Rome by train.  They visited the 'Fontana di Trevi' It's the most famous fountain Italy.  It was constructed in 1732 by Nicola Salvi.  Legend has it that if you throw in a coin you will be returning to Italy.  I'm sure that Becky emptied her purse!!!  Then for dinner, Gnochi with Pesto!!  Not sure wat they are doing tomorrow, their last full day, but Thursday it will be back to the Vatican and then to the airport.  I can't wait to see the photos and have my honey home!  The dogs miss her and are starting to drive me crazy.

    ******************************************************************************************

Well, I still have some last minute house cleaning to and luckily I have 2 more days to do it.  Good thing too because my back went out today.  It's not too bad so I did 'stand up' work today.  It's feeling better now. Got all three bathrooms done, the kitchen is spotless and dusting is finished.  Tomorrow?  Hands and knees wood and tile floor scrubbing (Do Not EVER buy while tile if you own three dogs!!!).  But my gel-filled kneepads really help.  Then on Thursday, the rest of the windows, including the 10 X 5 picture window!  That's always SOOO fun!!  She asked me if she would be proud of me  and I said, "I hope so!!".  I'm sure she will immediately find something I missed!!  I actually considered hiring a maid service!  LOL!

    ****************************************************************************************

Still waiting for those Santa Ana winds but they are not supposed to be as strong as they thought, and not as hot!!  Woooo Hoooo!!!  Also, all of the fires are OUT!!

An old Toby Keith song (1990's) but it's a good one!
    Have a Super mid-week.
    October 20

    Italy Update

Becky deleted some of her duplicate and fuzzy/over-exposed pics last night so without buying a new card she now has 180 photos left.  I think she's going to put her photos on disk.

They spent yesterday in Rome visiting the Vatican, the Colisuem, the Forum, and St Peter's Basillica but they were too tired to make it up those steps!!  LOL

Tomorrow to Naples and then Pompeii, if their feet don't fall off overnight.  Tonight they are staying in a cottage at a Nunnery named 'Casa de Ferie Santa Chiara'.  Much more Italian than the Holiday Inn in Florence!   By the way, I think they are ready to come home.

    ****************************************************************************************

Tomorrow is trash pick-up day so we all put our bins out the day before.  Each week I receive a visit from this old Vietnamese woman who picks out any glass or plastic.

    MVC-009S

I have talked to her and she seems really nice but hard to tell since she speaks NO English.  Who knows what she is calling me.  But she's very methodical and always cleans up after herself.  I tried to offer her $5 several times but she adamantly refuses.  So recently I have started putting all glass items in a separate waste can and then placing them on the top of the bin.  Now she waves at me! LOL!!!

I'm really getting antsy for the World Series to begin.  Wednesday night!!  GO PHILLIES!!!  I just hope they haven't rested to long.

Diamond Rio tonight.  Something a little more upbeat and fun!

Enjoy Tuesday.  Santa Ana winds on the way here.

    October 19

    Sunday Rant!

First of all, I need to correct myself.  Last years firestorm destroyed 240,000 acres, not 110,000.

Now, first off, those Santa Ana winds return this week and of of course, our imcompetent weather people have no idea how strong or how many days they will last.

Here's the thing.  Two committees came up with 26 suggestions to improve Orange County's firefighting abilities totalling $200,000 million.  Instead the State legislature rejected everyting but $14.1 million.  Of course since none of the politicians live in fire areas..

Bottom line ( and all of these go into effect NEXT year):

    1. Develop a program to offer more assistance to homeowner's in wildfire areas.

    2. Order two new Bell 412 helicopters.  Delivery in February 2009.

    3. Establish a full-time, year-round hand crew.  In place by January 2009.

    4. Establish staffing to FOUR persons at 12 stations, phased in over four years!  What???

What they REJECTED was adding 1,100 firefighters and 131 new fire engines!

    WTH???

Here are some quotes from Orange County Fire Chief Chip Prather:

"I didn't expect it would take so long to get the help we got".

"We're going to have to be able to stand on our own for a longer period of time".

"Can I say that everything is in place to prevent another firestorm? That's like saying, can you prevent another Katrina!"

Here a few photos from last years firestorm, and a storm it was!!!

    17_santiago1_large

    17_santiago2_large

    17_santiago4_large

"The other bottom line is there is at least one arsonist is still running around out there, the brush is so dry it's ready to start a fire just from cars driving by, there are hundreds of houses built against the wildland interface and the Santa Ana winds are coming," said Orange County's Prather. "The risk is extreme."

"We are going to do our best when the bad things happen," Prather said. "But we're only humans."

    October 18

    Day of Reckoning...

For my gardeners.  Not that I would EVER fire them but after those high winds we had earlier in the week, it will be interesting to see how good of a job they do.   My front yard, rose bed, patio and especially back yard are a mess!!  Leaves, branches, Spruce and Pine needles, trash and thousands of leaves from this tree:

    MVC-007S

This old Maple is at least 100 feet tall and it's leaves are 6" across.  Because that tree is northeast of me, my yard collects all of it's leaves.  And I mean the ONLY yard!!

Anyhow, as usual my gardeners went above and beyond!  They even pruned my Chinese Elm without being asked.

    MVC-008S

Normally they are here for 15/20 minutes.   Today?  An hour!!

    ****************************************************************************************

The other day of reckoning belongs to the Tampa Bay Rays.  Sure, they have a 3 games to 2 lead in the series but the Red Sox have some history going for them.  In 1986 they came back from a 3 to 1 series lead to beat the Angels.  Last year the came back from the same 3 - 1 deficit to beat Cleveland and in 2004 they were behind 3 games to 0 against the Yankees and came back to win that series IN Yankee Stadium.  So beware Rays.  Hopefully the Rays are young, naive and talented enough to rebound from Thursday night.  As for me?  I still think the Phillies can beat either team.

Becky and her friends took a trip today and saw some old castles.  New card in the camera.  Back in Florence tonight and then off to Rome.

I hope you are all enjoying a fine autumn weekend.

    Woooo Hoooo!!

Guess what team made it to the World Series??  The PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I'm SO excited!!  The last time was 1993 and the last time they won it was 1980. I can't wait!!  As long as they don't embarass them selves.  Their manager, Charlie Manual, lost his Mother during this series but he stayed and he will be taking a private jet to North Carolina tonight to attend her funeral.  I'm so ready for the Rays to close out the Red Sox  because... well.. the Sox suck!!!  A bunch of old men with the worst beards I've ever seen!  A cross between cavemen, Vikings  and Hockey players in the playoffs!  I'm just glad the Yankees and Mets aren't in it!!  LOL!!  GO PHILLIES!!!!!

    San Fernando Valley Fires

Well, here we go again!  Those Santa Ana winds did indeed kick in... BIG time!!  So those few, relatively small brush fires turned into raging wildfires overnight.  Where I live there is no fire danger but the winds are blowing 50 to 65 mph, the humidity is 20% and the air quality is very poor due to all of the smoke.  The winds have recently gotten even stronger in the fire area so the fixed-wing 'Super-Scoopers' have been grounded.  They are saying that the winds will be howling tonight.

I copied this article from the L A Times.  It was published 45 minutes ago but but conditions have gotten much worse since then.  Homes are being lost as embers are blown from roof to roof, freeways are being closed and there are now mass evacuations.

2 dead, nearly 9,000 acres burned in two San Fernando Valley fires

Two massive fires were burning out of control in the San Fernando Valley, devouring nearly 9,000 acres, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents, closing freeways and causing at least two deaths.

In Porter Ranch, a blaze consumed more than 3,700 acres, jumping the 118 Freeway in a rapid march to the southwest. The freeway was covered in smoke, and one motorist was killed in an accident authorities believe is linked to the fire. Fire officials warned residents in the western San Fernando Valley and eastern Ventura County areas that they could be ordered to evacuate at any moment.

County officials said that several homes and other structures have burned near Topanga Canyon Boulevard near the 118 Freeway as the fire swept through.

In Lake View Terrace, a 5,000-acre wildfire driven by intense Santa Ana winds destroyed about 30 mobile homes on Lopez Canyon Road in the foothills near Lake View Terrace today as more neighborhoods were being ordered evacuated and critical patients moved from a medical center.

Officials confirmed that at least one person, who appeared to be a homeless man with his dog, was killed by the fire. His dog also appeared to have been overcome by flames.

Because of the Marek fire near Lake View Terrace, neighborhoods in Sylmar to the north of El Cariso Golf Course were evacuated, as well as those to the west near Veterans Memorial Park. Patients on ventilators from Olive View Medical Center were being moved to County-USC Medical Center, officials said.

The Marek fire had been 20% contained Sunday night, but the number was downgraded to 5% this morning as 65 mph winds sent flames shooting 200 feet into the air.

"As predicted, the Santa Ana winds did indeed come up, and it blew the fire out of our containment lines," said L.A. County Fire Chief Michael Freeman.

Angeles National Forest spokesman Stanton Florea said the fire will likely burn for several days, but that firefighters were trying to get it tamped down ahead of the winds. If the fire spreads farther uphill, an area near some California condor nests could be threatened, and protecting those condors would be a priority, he said.

In Porter Ranch, fire officials ordered an evacuation of Brown Canyon Road and Oat Mountain Way near Chatsworth. Investigators were also looking into reports that several arson blazes had been started today along the Antelope Valley Freeway. At least one fire, which started at 10:21 a.m., had charred several acres before it was knocked down, according to a Los Angeles County fire spokesman.

Fire officials conducting a damage assessment of the Marek fire confirmed that at least 30 mobile homes were destroyed at the Sky Terrace Mobile Lodge. Authorities earlier had reported that 37 mobile homes and a garage were destroyed at Sky Terrace but later said they could not be sure that all the mobile homes and the garage were at that facility.

At least 220 fire engines were on the scene of the Marek fire, and seven strike teams from Northern California were helping local firefighters battle the blaze. Another six teams were on their way.

Fueled by 65 mph winds, the fire also forced the closure of the 210 Freeway and several area schools and prompted the evacuation of 3,800 residents. The boundaries of the evacuation area were Maclay Street to the west, Gavina Street to the north, Kagel Canyon to the east and the 210 freeway to the south.

County Fire Inspector Frank Garrido said the acreage burned had grown from 2,100 Sunday night to at least 3,700 after the Marek fire had jumped a fire line about 4:30 a.m. in an area of Lopez Canyon.

An evacuation order for the eastern San Fernando Valley remains in effect as the Marek fire burns in a southwesterly direction toward homes and major freeways northwest of Lake View Terrace, Garrido said. The evacuation area now stretches west from unincorporated Olive View to Lake View Terrace.

"It's a blowtorch right now," Garrido said. "If you are ahead of the fire, get your valuables and get out of the way."

Los Angeles Unified School District officials closed nine schools because of the fire. Officials also closed Mission College in Sylmar and canceled all classes at Cal State Northridge, although the campus remained open.

The fire, named for Marek Canyon, broke out early Sunday in the Angeles National Forest near Little Tujunga Road -- about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. It prompted the evacuation of 1,200 residents from 450 homes. Its cause is unknown.

A red flag warning has been issued through Tuesday evening, meaning that winds could reach 25 mph or more and humidity could drop to 15% or lower.

The fear is that wind-whipped embers could spark new fires, Padilla said.

About 125 residents stayed overnight at the evacuation center at San Fernando High School, which remains open. Another evacuation center was opened this morning at Sylmar High School in Sylmar. An evacuation center for horses and other animals has been established at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in Sylmar.

As usual, they suspect arson because all of the fires began near a remote canyon road.  Most wildfires in the United States are started by lightening... So Cal gets no lightening.  And all of the fires started at the same time. BTW, at noon the Marek fire was pronounced 40% contained and that's now been set at only 5%.  By tomorrow morning it's only going to be worse.

    Santa Ana Winds!

We have those damned Santa Ana winds moving in tonight, and I hope they don't stay long! For those of you who don't know what these winds are, a high pressure system forms over the Great Basin (Idaho, Utah, Colorado..) and it spins clockwise, bringing strong winds and low humidity into So Cal from the desert.  It's supposed to start tonight and continue into Tuesday.  65 mph winds and 5% humidity. Temps in the 80's!!  Main problem is that we  have 6 wildfires burning right now and our firefighters are trying contain them before the winds hit!!  Doesn't look good!!  And as usual it looks like arson!!  WTH??  We need some of Joe's (http://morbidshouse.spaces.live.com/) snow!!!  We'll see how things go.

    Rome, Gardeners, Ants and Mail

I finally was able to talk to Becky today.  They bought basic cellphones (no camera or texting) and special SIM cards for their trip so they took them in to a phone store and the guy told them. "These'a no gooda!!".  So they bought two new ones and are using the same SIMs.  Our arrangement is that I call her at noon my time, which is 9:PM her time.  Then I call her cousin and he calls to talk to his son.  Becky says that the boy has been a perfect traveling companion..... so far!!  They arrived in Rome at noon Italy time (3am here) yesterday.  The flight was long, 12 hours, but only half full.  So they each had a row to themselves.  They are now in Venice and yes, they took a Gondola ride!  They will be there until the 14th and then on to Florence.

    ****************************************************************************************

Being Saturday, my 'Super' gardeners were here today.  As I do every week I brought them each a bottle of water.  When I got to their truck I witnessed them changing the blade on their mower to the one that has my name on it!!!  Amazing!!  When they pull their blower out they blow off any leftover clippings on the lawn.  Then they pruned the roses, cleaned out the bed and blew the crap off of the front porch.  Total time?  20 minutes.  NO, you can't have them!

    ****************************************************************************************

With our temps in the upper 90's/100's range last week my old nemesis' returned!!  ANTZ!!  Yes with a Z!!  And they (all 10,000 of them!) went straight for the dogfood I had just bought!  Now we store it a sealed conainer but as I keep telling Becky, it won't work unless you seal it!!  So I had to dump 15lbs of food.  Luckily I has 25lbs left.  Then I had to kill the ants.  With 3 dogs, I don't like to use ant spray and those ant traps never work.  So what I use is...... Windex!!  Kills them instantly!!!  Then I simply let it dry and vacuum their little carcasses and mop the floor.  The past few days the temps have been in the 60's (I know... 104F to 64F in four days!!  And by Tuesday, upper 80's), and guess what? Not an ant in sight!!  Come on Winter!!

One last thing, and it's not about sports!  Got 2 mail deliveries again today.  9:30am and 4:30pm!!  WTH??

    Music SOON!!!

Hope you are all having a GREAT weekend!!!
