I read this in the newspaper today and it blew me away!!

    Just amazing!!

Mars rover Spirit encounters more age-related problems

Five years into a life expected to last 90 days, the rover failed to move after getting driving directions and didn't record a day's activities, NASA says. But it recovered and is back on the job.

    By John Johnson Jr.
    January 31, 2009

The long-lived Mars rover Spirit, already suffering from a gimpy wheel, has suffered a new round of aging problems in recent days, including a bout of what one NASA official called "amnesia."
John Callas, the rover program manager at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, said Spirit reported last Sunday that it had received its driving directions for the day. But it had not moved.

    •

"We're investigating whether it's the gyros or a camera problem," Callas said.
On Friday, JPL received the latest diagnostic data from Spirit's Inertial Measurement Unit, a combination of gyroscopes and accelerometers that helps the vehicle know where it is.
According to Callas, the gyroscopes appear to be working fine. The accelerometers, however, showed an "offset," which he compared to a compass that is off true north by a few degrees.
Though that's a problem, operators can correct for it.
The other trouble was even more of a surprise. It turned out that Spirit had failed to record last Sunday's activities in its nonvolatile memory, which remains active even when other systems are shut down. Callas referred to the problem as a 90-minute bout with amnesia.
He said the various problems did not appear to be linked.
Sharon Laubach, chief of the team that writes and checks commands for Spirit and its twin, Opportunity, was also unsure what's going on with the rover.
"We don't have a good explanation yet for the way Spirit has been acting for the past few days," she said. "Our next steps will be diagnostic."
Among the range of possible explanations is that a well-aimed cosmic ray hit the electronics, giving a kind of shock to the system. Despite the name, cosmic rays are high-energy particles, usually protons, that are accelerated to high speeds by the sun, as well as cataclysms in deep space.
Whatever the cause, Spirit later recovered its memory and was back on the job. "Right now, Spirit is under normal sequence control, reporting good health and responsive to commands from the ground," Callas said.
When Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars in 2004, scientists were hoping to get 90 days of use from them. Instead, they've lasted five years, challenging the imagination of rover scientists to find new jobs for them.
"Is this an indicator the systems are wearing out?" Callas said, unwilling to speculate. "We can't say."

And speaking of food and specifically Wings, I found this!

Over 200 Wings Carry Him To The Title

In a gut-busting display of championship eating, a man nicknamed Super Squibb has won Philadelphia's Wing Bowl by downing 203 chicken wings in about 20 minutes.  For his efforts, 23-year-old John Squibb of Berlin, NJ. gets a car, a $7500 diamond ring and a crown of miniature chickens.  Richard "Not Rich" Razzi came in second by eating 180 wings.

    What a hoot!!!

Some of you complained that I left out a photo of my long-haired, miniature Dachshund Baxter yesterday but at 2PM he was still in bed!!!  So here goes!!

Friday - Nothing to Post About

Wooo Hooo!!  Not much going on here today.  Neighbors must be hiding from me!  Santa Ana winds are back and it's hot!!  I HATE this weather!!  Too dry, too windy and NO rain in sight!!

Cleaning the house for Superbowl Sunday and loading with snacks!  So far the menu consists of 'R U Serious Buffalo Wings' ( I'm making 5lbs so I'm not sure what the rest of the people here will have), along with the usual chips and dips, maybe Babyback ribs and who knows what else!  I read a great sounding recipe for stuffed, grilled Jalapeno peppers today on Greg's BlogQuest space.

Anyhow, my Superbowl prediction remains Cardinals 26 - Steelers 21 (Sorry Jill!!).

Bonnie is resting up for the game!

    Bonnie 001

    And so is Buzz!

    Bonnie 003

See?  I told you I had nothing to blog about!!

    Freeway Tragedy

I debated with myself about posting this.  It was so horrible!!  I feel SOO sorry for everyone involved.... except the idiot driving the wrong way !!!!!

Two die in head-on collision on 10 Freeway

    By Corina Knoll
    January 29, 2009

A Culver City police officer and a 21-year-old Van Nuys man were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision that closed several lanes of the 10 Freeway for hours during the morning commute.
Sgt. Curtis Massey, 41, was driving east on his way to work when he was struck about 5 a.m. just west of National Boulevard by a silver Toyota Camry traveling the wrong way, said Officer Miguel Luevano of the California Highway Patrol. Massey's unmarked police car, a four-door Dodge Charger, was engulfed in flam

No one else was hurt, and the CHP is investigating. Pete Demetriou, a radio reporter for KFWB-AM (980), was driving to work about 4:55 a.m. on the eastbound 10 when he saw a car, driven by the Van Nuys man, coming toward him.
"You're used to seeing headlights coming at you, but you assume they're on the other side," he said. "At about 200 yards I realized he was coming in my lane." Demetriou said he called police after the car passed him traveling about 65 mph. All eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes of the 10 were closed at the 405 Freeway until about 1 p.m.
Massey, who is survived by a wife and three young children, was a 17-year veteran of the Police Department and was most recently assigned to the juvenile detective bureau.

Police Chief Don Pedersen told reporters that Massey dedicated much of his free time to working with at-risk teens and every year volunteered for the Santa sleigh, a holiday event in which officers escort Santa Claus around the city and distribute presents to children.
"He was a friend and trusted colleague who could always be counted on to be the first one to volunteer for an assignment," Pedersen said of Massey, who was a Medal of Valor recipient. "The community today has lost a dedicated police sergeant."
Megan Gallagher, 28, a former community service officer who worked with the department for five years, was shocked when she heard the news about Massey, a colleague who had served as her mentor.
"He was someone I looked up to and someone I trusted at the station -- being one of the few females there it's kind of hard to talk to everybody," she said. "When I started there, we have to get our uniforms and he offered up his jacket so I didn't have to spend the money. He made my first days there comfortable. He was an automatic friend from Day One."
On behalf of Massey's family, the department has set up the Sgt. Curtis Massey Memorial Fund. Donations can be sent to Culver City Employees Federal Credit Union, 9770 Culver Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232.

In a sort of related freeway story, a woman stole a U-Haul truck and led police on a 150 mile high-speed chase until she ran out of gas.  At least she was driving in the proper lanes.  Those never turn out well and yet the local news channels drop everything to cover them!  More idiots!!!

Santa Ana winds are back!! GRRRRRR!!  They just kill my sinuses and lungs.  Here for a few days and 78F today!  GAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

George Strait song today.  Of to work on my tan!!  KIDDING!!!

    January 28

    FINALLY!!!

Always something happening in this crazy neighborhood but this was a good thing!!  My neighbor Kurt, Redneck #1, had that eyesore of a pickup truck towed away today!!  WOOOOO!!!  It was quite the ordeal seeing as how it had four flat tires!!

    Ole Blue 001

Here is Kurt moving his life's possessions out of the truck.

    Ole Blue 002

    We have contact

    Ole Blue 003

    Off the ground at last!

    Ole Blue 004

I hope they didn't pay this guy by the hour!  It took forever.

    Ole Blue 005

    And away she goes!!!

    Ole Blue 006

He donated Ole Blue to a high school auto mechanics class.  Good luck!!

After all that, Kurt disappeared so I helped Charlotte (Crazy Lady) clean up the driveway and sprayed the weeds that had popped up.  Then she points out a 3" pink, dayglo dot painted on my neighbor Mike's curb and tells me that she thinks it means the city is putting IN a shopping center!!  I'm like "What???"  Where does she come up with this stuff??  She gets wackier every time I talk to her!  BTW, That dot was right in front of a streetlight pole and they are rewiring them!  Before I left she blamed me for putting her trash bins on her patio BACKWARDS!!!!!  They are round!!  That woman wears me out so I left!  But with Ole Blue gone, I can actually see down the street!

That's all I have for today.

Oh wait!!  I have this.  Read this today in the sports sction:

Just call Updike the Splendid Printer

By Grahame L. Jones, Los Angeles Times
    January 28, 2009

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist John Updike, who died Tuesday, was a baseball fan pure and simple. Anyone doubting the depth of his feelings for the game need only refer to a New Yorker magazine piece he penned in 1960 on Red Sox legend Ted Williams.
It was a 5,880-word essay, each sentence perfectly crafted. Here are just a few of them about watching the home run that Williams hit in his final at-bat. Williams was 42 at the time. Updike was 28.

"The ball climbed on a diagonal line into the vast volume of air over center field. From my angle, behind third base, the ball seemed less an object in flight than the tip of a towering motionless construct, like the Eiffel Tower or the Tappan Zee Bridge. It was in the books while it was still in the sky. . . .
"Like a feather caught in a vortex, Williams ran around the square of bases at the center of our beseeching screaming. He ran as he always ran out home runs -- hurriedly, unsmiling, head down, as if our praise were a storm of rain to get out of. He didn't tip his cap. Though we thumped, wept, and chanted, 'We want Ted' for minutes after he hid in the dugout, he did not come back."
One man could hit. The other could write.

Now I'm done!!  New song by Phil Vaser.  Good One!!

    WOOOO Freakin' HOOOOO!!!

I managed to fix my Desktop today despite MSN!!  (My next computer is SOOOO gonna be a Mac!!). I had been running System Restores for 2 weeks but today I booted up in Safe Mode and restored from January 11th!!  It worked!!   Reset my wireless network and was good to go.... Until MSN decided to force Security Updates on me THREE times!!  After each one I had to re-do the restore which took an hour each time.  The farther you go back, the longer it takes.  I then got rid of ZoneAlarm and reinstalled Trend Micro!  Spybot had to go too.  So my laptop is retired for now and I lost the post I did earlier.  If there was a virus, it's gone now.  It seems as if MSN is the biggest virus!  But the desktop is working well and I saved $175!

Now I know that most of you have been getting really cold weather but it was in the mid-30's here last night.  Stop laughing!!  lol  That's cold for So Cal.  More wind today, which made it seem colder.

Still working on those free Rascal Flatts tickets but it's tough.  I have my computer streaming the radio station so I know when to call and the phone is on speed dial.  If worse comes to worse I will buy them.  Tickets go on sale Saturday and the concert is March 14th.  But I will need to hurry because I'm sure it will be sold out.  Only the one show.

For some reason my gardeners didn't show up on Saturday.  Uh Oh!!!

The song tonight is another tearjerker by Rascal Flatts.

Stay warm and have a Great rest of the week!!

    Recipes

The weather here today is beautiful!  Sunny and temps in the 50's.  OOPS!!  Sorry......  But really, the rain has 'cleaned' the sky and I can actually see the mountains!!  I wish it would stay like this.

Our small dinner party was a BIG success!!  So I will post the recipes here.

    Say ‘Oui’ to Beef Burgundy

    Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Boeuf Bourguignon is a classic French dish, both hearty and elegant when served over mashed potatoes or thick egg noodles or with a crusty baguette to sop up the flavorful sauce. Maybe you’ve shied away from making it because it sounds difficult (heaven knows I did), but fancy French dishes are often easier to prepare than they sound.
“Boeuf Bourguignon” essentially translates to “Beef Burgundy,” or beef cooked with Burgundy wine. This French stew can be a great intro to cooking with wine.
Classically, the dish starts on the stove and finishes in the oven, but you can skip the oven and continue the braising process on the stovetop. Use a heavy-bottomed pot if you have one, and when it’s in the home-stretch simmer, turn the burner as low as it can go without the flame flickering. The stew will braise slowly, resulting in a home filled with the sweet aroma of wine and fork-tender chunks of beef.
Most braising recipes call for a sturdy cut of meat that can withstand low and slow cooking without turning into mush. Cuts like beef chuck and stew meat work well because they contain a lot of collagen, a strong connective tissue that eventually melts down into a gelatin. The result is soft, buttery meat you can pull apart with your hands (or fork).
While you’re cooking, you can actually see this process for yourself: In the initial cooking stages, the meat cubes seem to seize up, and it becomes difficult to jab them with a fork. But as time passes and the collagen melts away, the beef becomes softer, taking on the flavors of the wine, until finally you are left with meat that falls apart and is a delight to eat.
Before cutting beef into cubes, trim excess fat, paying close attention to the silvery, thick membrane that may be present on top of the chuck roast. This is inedible. To remove it, run your knife under the silver skin and peel it back from the roast.
There are differing opinions on what quality of wine to use while cooking. Some cooks believe that you can use a bottle of Two-Buck Chuck and the stew will be just as flavorful as if you had used a high-end wine. And then there are some who swear by cooking with the latter.
I’ve always adhered to this rule: If it’s a wine you wouldn’t drink, don’t use it to cook. So if you’ve been known to toss back a glass of Two-Buck Chuck without flinching, then you will be fine using it in your dish. Always use a wine you enjoy drinking.
In this recipe, you can also substitute other dry red wines for red Burgundy (pinot noir).
This recipe is simple: You finish the initial preparation, then dump everything into a pot and let the heat do the work. A bonus: Boeuf Bourguignon is more flavorful the next day (the sitting time allows the flavors to meld) so it’s a great do-ahead dish for a dinner party.
    BOEUF BOURGUIGNON (BEEF BURGUNDY)
Yield: 2 to 3 servings (can be doubled)
2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1 1/2- to 2-inch cubes
    1/4 cup flour
    3 strips thick-cut bacon, chopped
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1/2 cup onion, minced
    1/4 cup carrot, minced
    1/4 cup celery, minced
    1 garlic clove, minced
    1/2 pound mushrooms, sliced
1 1/2 cups beef broth or stock
1 1/2 cups red Burgundy wine
    1 bay leaf
    1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 cup (or more) frozen pearl onions
    Salt and pepper, to taste.
    Procedure:
    1. Place beef cubes and flour into large plastic bag. Shake bag to coat beef cubes with flour. Set aside.
    2. In a 3- or 4-quart pot over medium-high heat, fry chopped bacon in olive oil until crisp. Remove bacon with slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel.
    3. Remove beef cubes from plastic bag and shake off excess flour. Using the same pot as bacon, brown beef cubes in batches. Remove from pot and set aside with bacon.
    4. Add onion, carrot, celery and garlic to pot. Cook for about a minute. Add mushrooms and cook for 4 to 5 minutes more, or until mushrooms begin to brown and shrink.
    5. Slowly stir in beef broth and wine, using a wooden spoon to scrape fond (those brown bits) off bottom of pan. Add bay leaf, thyme, cooked bacon and browned beef. Beef should be covered by liquid. If it isn’t, you can add a bit more wine.
    6. Bring pot to boil and reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
    7. Remove lid from pot and add frozen pearl onions. Turn up heat to medium and cook for an additional 30 minutes uncovered, stirring occasionally, to heat pearl onions through and to thicken liquid (see cook’s note). Season with salt and pepper. Remove and discard bay leaf. Serve hot.
Cook’s note: At this stage, you can cook the stew for longer than 30 minutes to achieve desired liquid thickness. Generally, the stew is done when the liquid is nappe, or when it leaves a thin coating on the back of a spoon.

White And Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding With Irish Cream

    Sauce
    • 2 cups whipping cream
    • 6 tablespoons Irish cream liqueur
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
    • 2 teaspoons water

    Bread pudding
    • 14 cups 3/4-inch cubes French bread with crust (about 12 ounces)
    • 6 ounces bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate, chopped
    • 6 ounces imported white chocolate, chopped
    • 4 large eggs
    • 1/2 cup plus 4 tablespoons sugar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 2 cups whipping cream
    • 1/2 cup whole milk

    • Nonstick vegetable oil spray

    Preparation

    For sauce:
Bring cream, liqueur, sugar, and vanilla to boil in heavy medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring frequently. Mix cornstarch and 2 teaspoons water in small bowl to blend; whisk into cream mixture. Boil until sauce thickens, stirring constantly, about 3 minutes. Cool, then cover and refrigerate until cold, about 2 hours. (Can be made 3 days ahead. Keep refrigerated.)

    For bread pudding:
Combine bread, chocolate, and white chocolate in large bowl; toss to blend. Using electric mixer, beat eggs, 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, and vanilla in another large bowl to blend. Gradually beat in 1 1/2 cups cream and milk. Add cream mixture to bread mixture; stir to combine. Let stand 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish with nonstick spray. Transfer bread mixture to prepared dish, spreading evenly. Drizzle with remaining 1/2 cup cream. Sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons sugar. Bake pudding until edges are golden and custard is set in center, about 1 hour. Cool pudding slightly.

Drizzle bread pudding with sauce and serve warm.

This was SOOO good!!  Both were!

    A Meal To Die For!

First I have to tell you.... I'm about ready to throw BOTH of these computers in the ocean!!  Just to get online and on IE on the Desktop, I had to run 'System Restore' THREE times in Safe Mode. After I ran a Virus scan, Spy ware scan and Registry scan.  But I'm using it now.  As for the Laptop, it takes forever to connect although the connection is great!  So I'm on the Desktop but not for long.  I'm going to be on the Laptop tonight so expect anything!!  LOL!!  If I could just remember which mouse to use!!  HAHA!!

Well, we are expecting lots of rain but so far the weather gods have been teasing us!  That's life in So Cal!  Storms move in, move out, gain strength or disappear!!  You never know.

Did anyone watch the music video from last night??  HAH!!  I thought not!!  The video for the song I'm playing tonight is even better.  Brad Paisley is always good! BTW, Brad Paisley does his own guitar playing,

NOW!! The title for this post!!  I received this from a good friend today and it cracked me up!!

Another Day I Won't Get Back!

The cable guy showed at 8:00 and guess what??  Different guy and without the promised equipment.  But it's working on wireless now, see??  Had to uninstall my security (Zone Alarm) and install Trend Micro.  But both of these computers are ticking me off.  I can't get sound on the PC and can't download 'Live Writer' on the Laptop, so I am running them both!  Between the two I might finish this thing!!  LOL!

I spent the rest of the afternoon getting ready for the oncoming rain and doing laundry.  They are talking rain from tonight until next Thursday.  My bonsai will LOVE it!!

I also spent the afternoon watching and listening to Country Music Videos!!  I found some good ones on Yahoo.  It's amazing to me that when I hear a song on the radio or CD, I think I know what they are singing about.  But when I watch the video, it's completely different!!  Happens all the time.  Case in point, "What Hurts The Most" by Rascal Flatts.... A band I LOVE!!!  There are only three of them (singer, guitar and bass) but they bring in 'studio musicians' who are awesome!  But the video... I would never have imagined. Anyhow, I am playing that song tonight and I will try to post the video.  If not, go to Yahoo/Music/Videos/Country and look for it!!  It's a tearjerker but GOOD!!!  I think you will like this song and this Trio!!

Here is my new computer setup (Control Central!!)  LOL!!  I keep grabbing the wrong mouse!!

    Computer

Yeah, it's busy but it works for me!!  That spray bottle??  For the dogs!! lol  And this post is on the screen!  Think 'Starship Enterprise!!'!!

OK! I'm outta here!!  Hope you all had a Great 'Hump Day'!!  And really!!  Find and watch that video!!

    January 20

    Short Post Today

Busy day and no time for pictures even though, Dang!!  I was at the Mall!!  REAL strangers there!!  HAH!!

But today I took my wife's car to the carwash, grocery shopped, went to the mall and bought her a 2lb box of dark chocolate creams, brought my and my neighbors trash bins in from the curb, dusted, cleaned the kitchen, mopped the kitchen floor and polished the kitchen sink!  Whew!!

Anyhow, the main reason I posted was to post this song which I hadn't heard in years.  I've always liked Lee Ann Womack.  It's really funny but you may have to listen more than once.  She has that 'twang' in her voice that I love!!

The cable guy comes tomorrow so hopefully I'll be posting on my laptop.  About time!!  Take care and enjoy the song.

    Good and Bad..... and Strange!

GOOD: I woke up this morning and as I went to pick up my newspapers I saw this!  These photos don't do it justice.

    Sunrise 002

    Sunrise 001

Some day I'm going to sneak over and pull down that antenna!!

BAD:  The plumber showed up at 8:00!!  I'm just not a morning person but he did a good job at a great price.

GOOD: I fixed the two leaking toilets myself!  I get a gold star!!

STRANGE:  I exchanged a USB hub (converts one USB port on your computer to Four) at Radio Shack and told them that I was getting errors when I tried to use it.  The girl plugged it in and said, "But it lights up!". Anyhow, she gave me a new one but kept the packaging so they could RESELL IT!!  WTH????

BAD:  My Eagles lost yesterday!!  So the Sports page wasn't very much fun to read.  But at least you won't have to hear me yakking about them.

GOOD:  Since it's a holiday, Discovery Channel is doing a 'Man vs Wild' marathon!!  WOOO!  My favorite!  It's a survival show and you would NOT believe the things the things he eats and drinks.  Right now Bear Grylls is in the Sahara and making a bed/shelter out of a dead camel!!  Dinner?  Two scorpions and two raw goat testicles!!  YUCK!!!!  Now he's eating his bed!!  But at least he's cooking it!  Maybe this should be in the STRANGE category!

Footnote:  He barfed up the testicles as the Berber natives laughed at him!!  HAHAHA!

Since I seem to have a theme here, I leave you with this.  It should insult just about everyone!!

    Heaven and Hell

Heaven is where the police are British, the chefs Italian, the mechanics German, the lovers French, and it is all organized by the Swiss.

    Have a GREAT week!!

    T-Bird!

As I pulled into the Albertson's parking lot today, this guy parked a few spaces down.  As I was walking into the store, I had to go back and check this car out.  It's a 1965 Ford Thunderbird, fully loaded.

    T-Bird 001

He told me that it cost him $5,500 and he paid $49 a month.  He is the original owner.  The paint and interior are original but he had to replace the engine.

    T-Bird 002

I thought it was a thing of beauty!!

    T-Bird

WOW!!!!!  And yeah, he posed for me!  LOL!

    **************************************************************************************

Today is Saturday and we all know what means.  'Gardener Day'!!  Remember that discount I was given for referring customers to them?  I thought it was a one-time thing but he told me today that it is permanent because as he said, "You are a good boss!  Some are mean to us"!  I can think of at least 2 on our block!  So today... Mow, feed, weed, prune roses, pretty up the backyard, remove those huge leaves that the winds deposited and oh yeah, blow the dust off of our cars!!  Anyhow, now I'm paying LESS than I originally hired them for!!

Here they are doing their thing at my neighbor's yard

    T-Bird 003

My neighbor across the street is now giving them water too!!  So now they are pretty much floating out of here!!

And the equipment in their truck

I haven't heard a peep from my friends from the northern Midwest so I'm thinking they are either close, frozen on the side of the road or laughing their butts off!!  One of them said she was bringing her cat!!  Now, Bonnie loves cats but she can't eat a whole one!!!

    **************************************************************************************

Here are the odds for tomorrow, playoff day.

    Philadelphia by 4

    Pittsburg by 6

The chance of those women showing up at kickoff time??  Off the books!  Pick 'em!!

I kid!!  I would love to meet them.  But my wife is freaking!!  The front yard looks great, The back yard not so great (Hey!!  It's Winter here too!) and with 3 dogs, the house is kinda messy.  But we have plenty of food, 3 computers, beautiful weather, comfy places to sleep and Disneyland 15 minutes away!!

I really love the song I played last night but I MUST play my "Sunday" song!

I have to play ball with Bonnie now!!

    T-Bird 006

Have a Great night and a Wonderful Sunday!!

    January 16

    My Crazy Women Friends!!!

    But I love them all!!

NO names but I began receiving messages saying, "We are trying to get out of Iowa", "We just polished off a bottle of Bailey's",  "We are coming" and "Wait until we pull into your driveway!"  They want a trip to the fire station to drool!!!  I hope they make it past South Dakota!  I think that they are trying to escape the frigid weather.  You know?  It would be really fun!!!  Beach and Disneyland!  Supposedly, they have a sign on their van saying "California or Bust"!!  Too funny!!  Now, if they only had my address!  Hehehehe!!!  They are bringing Ms Cat and my dogs are ready!  Bonnie LOVES cats but she can't eat a whole one!!

    ***************************************************************************************

My neighbor's new patio was completed today and it looks GOOD!!  BBQ time soon!

I wish these guys had built my patio because they were GOOD!!  Mine were only ok...

    Mike 001

    Mike 002

A good friend of my wife offered us the use of her condo in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico  for a week for $400, and $300 airfare, round trip!!  We are thinking YES!!  Remember when I walked through that glass door??  Same place, but I know my way around now!!  We had so much fun last time and it will probably be cooler!!  LOL!

Well, I hope you all have a fantastic night and a super weekend!!  Don't forget Football on Sunday and I will surprise you with a different song tonight!!

    Take care my friends!!

    January 15

    More Odds THAN Ends

My neighbor Mike, the only sane one on the block, has his new patio almost done.  I'm expecting to be invited for a big BBQ!  Today the lumber arrived and the workers spent all day painting the boards in the street!!

    Mike 004

    Mike 005

I have actually become friends with them and of course, bring them water!   Speaking of water, we have three leaky faucets that I cannot fix.  Because I'm:

    #1  Lame

    #2  NOT a plumber!

So a real plumber will be here Monday morning.

    **************************************************************************************

There has been a lot of sports talk and analysis about this weekend's upcoming NFL playoff games.  Here are a few selected pearls from David letterman's "Top 10 Signs You're Watching Too Much Football".

"When your wife finishes making dinner, you dump a jug of Gatorade on her."

"Laura has to keep reminding you that you're still president."

As I often do to get through a day, I have been making lists - shave, get dressed, breathe deep, that sort of thing.  In this case, I'm making lists for Brett Favre.  Does he stay or go?  Pros and cons.  Pluses and minuses.  It's almost impossible not to have a little fun.

    Reasons for Favre to retire...

    *  Keeps falling asleep in huddles.

    *  During coin flip, refs offer him an AARP discount.

    *  CBS planning new show:  "CSI: Brett Favre."

Reasons for Favre not to retire...

    *  A little gut looks good on a quarterback.

    * There are 29 teams he hasn't played for.

    *  Even in a wheelchair, he can always beat Chicago.

See, Favre loves football the way I love raindrops on roses and meatballs on toothpicks.  This retirement of his is a complicated saga, deeply personal and compounded by the fact that even when he goes, he sometimes ends up staying.  There is something marvelous and vaguely Shakespearean in his grinding passion for our nation game.

Hamlet in a chin-strap.... refusing to take a knee.

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend.  I'll be around to visit tonight and tomorrow.  I owe you ALL!!!

    January 14

    More Odds and Ends

Hey!!  I have to post something or I develop a twitch in my left eye!

I was mistaken about the temperature here yesterday.  I mentioned that it was 90F but it ended up being 98F!!  And it's all heading your way!!  Today in the 80's and then to the 70's!!  Still no rain in sight but by next week, the 60's!!

    **************************************************************************************

The Cable Guy came here today to set up my Laptop on wireless.  No-Could-Do!!  It only worked 10 feet from the modem!  So now he's coming out NEXT WEDNESDAY to hard-wire it!  The same system that we used to have and they got rid of 2 years ago.  You plug this modem into a wall outlet and the signal runs through the power lines.  It always worked well but now I'm confused!  Why did they drop it and why are they bringing it back??  Good news is, I can go to any room, plug into a wall outlet and be online!  I guess that's good....

    ***************************************************************************************

It's official!!  My dogs are crazy!!  Bonnie brought a Sparrow that she had killed onto my pillow and then licked me so I would roll over and see it!!  What a GOOD dog!!  YECH!!! Baxter crapped in my shoe.    Buzz has a NEW howl!!  Like a Hound!!  LOL!

    **************************************************************************************

Eating the heck out of our oranges!!  So Good!  We pruned the tree two years ago, had none last year but this year??  Hundreds and some are 4" in diameter!  I wish I could send some to all of you!!  They are SOOOO sweet!

    **************************************************************************************

So here's my prediction for the rest of the NFL playoffs and the SuperBowl.Philly over Arizona, Pittsburg over Baltimore and - drum roll please - the Eagles over Pittsburg!

    **************************************************************************************

Going out to our favorite restaurant tonight, yet again, for Mexican food!!  I'm thinking Albondigas (meatball soup), Chile Relleno and the world's best Taco!!

Have a GREAT Thursday!!  Here's a song I haven't played here befrore.  Check it out!

Even More Heat and PETA is at it Again

The high winds are 'supposed' to die down but it's going to be even hotter today.  How about 90F!!!!!  I'm wearing shorts today (Speedos count as shorts, right??  Kidding!!!  LOL!).  And no, I don't live in Death Valley.  It's this huge high pressure system hovering over the Great Basin that won't move.  But when it finally heads East, you will love it!

    ************************************************************************************************************************

I found this article in the Orange County Register today.  PETA and the ACLU just annoy me.  This article was written by a blogger for the Register named 'Sciencedude'.  It includes comments to his blog.  You can go to www.peta.com to read about their latest campaign, but here is the article and comments.

‘Sea kittens’ less than adorable, readers say

By GARY ROBBINS The Orange County Register

    Like, meow!

Hundreds of readers were mad and bemused to read in my Sciencedude blog Monday that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is running a national campaign to rename fish “sea kittens” to discourage people from eating them.

“When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it’s time for a serious image makeover,” PETA says on its Web site.

“And who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?”

PETA also wants people to tell the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife to stop promoting fishing because, “Neurobiologists tell us that fish have nervous systems that comprehend and respond to pain, and that, when it comes to the ability to feel pain, fish are just like dogs, cats, and all other animals.”

Here’s a sample of reader comments, which have not been edited for spelling or grammar:

“As an animal lover, I hate to see any animal mistreated or abused. But I think PETA fails to distinguish between morally recognizable forms of killing, such as for nutritional or survival purposes, and say sporting purposes, which is primarily for recreation or entertainment. They basically just say killing any animal is wrong. Do they believe in euthanasia?” Marmar

“PETA is like fanatical Islam, wanting ‘change’ to their definition of what should be. One can only hope that PETA sends their missionaries to foreign countries (like the Congo, Zambia, South Africa and other 3rd world nations) to demonstrate against eating meat/fish, people and convince them to become vegetarians!” X-DEM

“Would a cat fish be called a Cat Kitten? I think I am going to get some kitten tacos for lunch. Or maybe some pasture puppies … .” ThisIsNotAnExit

“I guess I wont need a fishing license anymore, because I’m going kittening.” Bob Holtz

“Why don’t they go pick on the people that are eating CATS and not on the ones eating fish.” EMM EMM Cat for dinner

“How ridiculous is this? PETA is so miopic. Billions of the earth’s inhabitants depend on the ocean’s bounty for their food. Most of the world can’t just change their eating habits. Many places are unable to cultivate diverse agricultural products, thus leaving them mal-nuturished, lacking a protein staple. Fish provide that and much more.” BrentClawson

“OK. Here’s some more: birds = air hamsters | cows = pasture puppies | chickens = coop critters | this stuff writes itself.” Remmy700p

“Hmm don’t cats eat fish… therefore I guess they’re cannibals.” bpsqwerty

“ ‘Sea Kittens’ sounds good to me. Especially if it comes with chop sticks, soy sauce and wasabi.” OCerr

'Sea Kitten Sticks' sound good for dinner tonight!!  Meow! Meow! GOOD!!!

Going to turn on the A/C!!  Have a Great day!!

    January 12

    Soapbox Time, GRRRRR!!!!

Three months ago we opened a a checking account and a credit card at Ch*** Bank.  Double air miles and a great interest rate on the credit card.  Since then our relationship with has gone downhill.... FAST!!

    Here's a short synopsis:

    1.  I wrote a check from our home equity account at another without checking my balance (my bad!) and it bounced.  Ch***'s solution was to put a $1,000,000 debit on our account!!  Ch*** wanted a letter from the bank that the check was written from but said bank never received it back and considered still open.  Turns out that Ch*** was sitting on it!  That's how Ch*** handles fraud I guess!  That took two weeks to resolve.

    2.  For some reason we decided to consolidate our credit cards, home equity loans and refinance through them.  BIG mistake!!  They sent out an appraiser, really nice guy, who took measurements, etc  but as it turns out, Ch*** sent the appraiser an email telling to stop where he was, debited our account and then never paid the guy!!

    3.  We received a letter and a check in the mail informing us that they were closing our checking account.  No explanation!!

    4.  Our other bank called and offered to consolidate and refinance at HALF of the interest rate.  When I called Ch*** and told them they said, "Oh, we can do that!!!".  Oh yeah??  Then why am I shopping around and why do I have to call YOU???

    5.  I am in the process of trying to recover that appraisal fee but getting no where.

    6.  The branch I am being crazy with is in AZ so every call is long distance.  After far, $170 in calls!

So I think we are calling it quits with them.  Beware!!  The miles are not worth it!

    **************************************************************************************

I saw Billy, my homeless friend today!!  (You remember him!) He had music blasting!!  I said "Oh! New radio".  His reply was, "Yeah!!  I saved the money you gave me and bought it!!".  WOW!!!!  How cool is that??  But as usual, I forgot my camera!!

    **************************************************************************************

It was 83F today with even more wind!!  I'll trade anyone this for 3 days of snow!!  83F in January is just wrong!!  No rain in sight!!!!  UGH!!

    Have a COOL Tuesday!!

    Eagles/Giants game

First off I would like to thank my wife for the 'Honey-Do' list I was given 5 minutes before the game started.  But by running back and forth during commercials and halftime I was able to complete it.  Actually, these things needed to be done and I'm the man for the job.  Now don't bug me!!

At halftime it's a baseball score, 10 to 8 Eagles.  Now a few observations from the first half:

    1.  Both teams pretty much suck, although the Giants are sucking more, but not by much.

    2.  Eli Manning is WAY over rated.

    3.  The officiating, as usual, is horrible.

    4.  Tom Coughlin is a terrible coach!

    5.  Players are dropping like flies.

    6.  I like the Joe Buck,Troy Aikman announcing team.

    7.  I wonder what Andy Reid's cholesterol reading is!

    8.  The Giant's kicker had missed 3 field goals all year.....  He has missed TWO today!

    9.  The officiating is STILL horrible!!!

    10.  The Giants have ZERO sacks against Donovan McNabb in the 12 quarters.

    11.  These teams hate each other!!

    12.  Did I mention that Tom Coughlin is a terrible coach??

Best quote of the first half:  After this HUGE (6' 6", 380lb) Giants lineman made an interception and rumbled for 20 yards, Troy Aikman said, "For a big guy he runs pretty well".  Joe Buck countered with, "He had the wind behind his back"!!  HAHA!!

It's now 13 to 11 Eagles and I'm squirming in my seat!  GREAT game!

20 to 11 Eagles!!  Giants are in trouble!  I hope!

That idiot Coughlin made a stupid challenge and lost!!  So now they only have one timeout left with a whole quarter to go.

Final score, Eagles 23, Giants 11!!!  On to face the Cardinals!!  YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I apologize for this post..... I guess it was mainly for me because I was going crazy and needed something to do!  Now on to the Chargers/Steelers game!  Don't worry.... I won't post about it.  GO CHARGERS!!

    Eagles
